ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's soccer team (1-1-0) scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over King's College (1-1-0) in game one of the 2015 Doug May Memorial Tournament at Tiger Stadium on Saturday. Freshman
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) and sophomore
Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) each scored for the Tigers, while
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) picked up his first collegiate win in net, making eight saves.
"We sustained a higher level of play today," said RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "We played with a lot more effort today, and were able to keep possession on a more consistent basis."
Shots were 17-11 in favor of the Tigers, who took six shots on net to eight for the Monarchs. DeFeo finished with his first three collegiate points on a goal and an assist. Kouroupas tallied the second RIT goal. Cinibulk made eight saves, including six in the second half.
"Anthony (DeFeo) put in a fantastic effort today," said Garno. "(Peter) Cinibulk was excellent as well, especially in the second half, making several key saves."
Owen Geedey took the loss in net for King's, with four saves.
RIT took the momentum early in the first half when DeFeo fired a shot from 15 yards out that Geedey was able to tip over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick,
Scott Fishel (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had a free run at a header, but his shot went just wide of the King's post.
The Tigers generated several good scoring chances in the first half, another came when
Mike Reverdatto (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) sent
Geno Rocco (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) free down the flank. Rocco cut in-field and fired a shot that was saved by Geedey.
RIT finally broke through on DeFeo's first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute.
Rueben Marquez (Williamson, NY/Williamson) found DeFeo with a nice pass that he headed into the far corner giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
King's had a great chance moments later with a loose ball inside the RIT penalty area. Brian Fenster fired a shot from in close that Cinibulk saved to preserve the Tigers one-goal lead.
After halftime, Jonathan Nixon had a shot go just wide of the RIT post three minutes into the second stanza. Chris Nygren had a chance with 35 minutes to play that Cinibulk saved. The RIT goalkeeper also made a save with 35 minutes to play on Daniel Hernandez to preserve the lead.
The Tigers put the game away with Kouroupas' goal in the 75th minute. DeFeo got by his defender and made a run down the flank. He sent a service into the King's penalty area that Kouroupas gathered and tapped into the open net, giving RIT a 2-0 lead.
King's had a chance with 10 minutes remaining when Nygren fired a shot that was headed for the far corner, but Cinibulk tipped the ball over the cross-bar. He made another diving save on a shot from Hernandez to preserve the shut out.
RIT returns to action on Sunday, Septemebr 6 when they host Buffalo State at 11 a.m. in game two of the Doug May Memorial Tournament.
