CANTON, NY -- The RIT (9-6) women's volleyball team lost in five sets to Medaille College (7-3), 3-2 on Friday evening at the Canton Classic on the campus of SUNY Canton. The Tigers dropped the first set, 25-15, but won the next two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-11. RIT dropped the fourth set, 25-14 and lost an exciting fifth set, 16-14. These two teams met back on Sept. 11 at the Golden Flyer Invitational, with Medaille prevailing in three sets.
"This was a fun match to coach," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "If we can grow from this and learn to take the opportunities when they are presented to us, we will be better during Liberty League play."The Tigers led 9-5 in the decisive fifth set, but could not get the win.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) led the Tigers with 33 assists and added a season-best 23 digs.
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) had 10 kills, seven digs and four assisted blocks. Amy Van Hienen (Castor, Alberta/Gus Wetter) added nine kills, to go along with four service aces and 14 digs. Aleah Chinn (Wichita, KS/Witchita Southeast) also had nine kills, hitting .474 for the match. Liz Wunder (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) had six solo blocks to pace the Tigers.
RIT returns to action on Saturday at the Canton Classic. The Tigers will face SUNY Canton at noon and Keuka College at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place on the campus of SUNY Canton.
