No. 15 RIT women's soccer drops first game of season with loss to University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 15 RIT women's soccer team (6-1-1) had plenty of scoring chances, just could not score as the Tigers fell to University of Rochester (4-2-1), 1-0 in non-conference action from Tiger Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The goal allowed by the Tigers was the first conceded since the season opener against Nazareth, a span of 626 minutes.

Shots were 17-11 in favor of RIT. RIT took 10 corner kicks to just two for the Yellow Jackets. Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the start in net for RIT, making two saves in 45 minutes of action and taking the loss. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played the second half and made one save. Madilynne Lee got the win for Rochester, making seven saves.

RIT had several really good scoring chances in the first half, but could not break through. Olivia DeLuca (Centerpoint, NY/Harborfields) had a great chance late in the half. Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) started the play with a ball out to Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) who was making a run down the right flank. Chester got free and sent a ball across the Rochester goal-mouth just out of a diving DaLuca's reach as she was making the run to the far post.

DaLuca had a similar chance earlier in the half that was just out of her reach from a service from Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark). Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) generated a good chance a little less than 15 minutes into the half when she took the ball on the ball dribbled in field and drilled a shot from 20-yards out that Lee was able to save.

Rochester broke through in the 43rd minute when Lee Stagg scored off assists from Kim Stagg and Laura Cowie-Haskell. Stagg put home the shot when her twin sister tapped over a pass on a loose ball inside the RIT penalty area.

The Tigers kept fighting in the second half, generating some really good chances. Early in the half, Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) got around her defenders and served a ball into Caitlyn Daly (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) who was wide open inside the Rochester penalty area. Daly took one too many touches inside the penalty box and her shot was deflected wide by a Yellow Jackets defender.

Ornellas had a chance with a little over 16 minutes to play when she made a run down the middle. Her shot was blocked out of danger by the Yellow Jackets defense. Wolfe had a great chance with seven minutes to play. Her header off a corner kick looked to be headed for the bottom right corner, but Lee was able to make the sprawling save to preserve the lead.

Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) had a long shot from about 30 yards out with three minutes to play that Lee tipped over the top of the net at the last second.

The loss breaks a seven-game unbeaten streak by the Tigers, including a six-game winning streak. Rochester leads the all-time series between the two schools, 21-3-3.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they open Liberty League play by hosting No. 21 St. Lawrence University at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
