PITTSFORD, NY -- Freshman
Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) scored two second half goals to help the RIT (3-4-0) men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over cross-town rival Nazareth CollegeĀ (0-8-0) in non-conference action from Golden Flyer Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers are now 26-6-5 all time versus the Golden Flyers, including a four-game winning streak.
"I am proud how we battled back from some silly mistakes to get the win," said RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "We need to get better at our decision-making, but I was glad how we battled back and got the win."
Shots were 25-17 in favor of RIT, who took four corner kicks to three for the Golden Flyers.
Chris Dill (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) got the start in net for RIT, making seven saves in 66 minutes of action.
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) played the final 23:49 and picked up the win for RIT. Alex McLean played all 90 minutes for Nazareth, making nine saves.
RIT controlled play in the first half, generating some good scoring chances.
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) had a good chance with about 27 minutes to play when he was played into the Nazareth penalty area with a ball from
Raul Silva (San Diego, CA/Madison). DeFeo's shot was just wide of the Nazareth net.
The Tigers finally broke through in the 28th minute when
Scott Fishel (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) scored off an assist from Sicoli on a free kick. Sicoli sent a service from just outside the 18-yard box. Fishel read the service, measuring his leap perfect, heading the ball in for his first goal of the season and 1-0 RIT lead.
Blake Owens tied the score at 1-1 with his goal six seconds from halftime off an assist from Darryl Toscano. Owens gathered the pass from Toscano and fired a shot from 25 yards out that beat Dill into the upper corner.
That score would stand until the 67th minute when Ben Rodney gave Nazareth a 2-1 lead off an assist from Kieran McCoy. Rodney took a pass from McCoy and got free of his defender, scoring into the low corner.
The Tigers would not be denied this day, as Sicoli tied the score at 2-2 on his fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute. He scored on a slow-rolling shot that dribbled passed the Nazareth defense and keepers.
Less than two minutes later, Sicoli scored again off a corner kick from
Mike Reverdatto (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) who sent in an in-swinging service that Sicoli gathered and fired into the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
RIT was able to kill the last few minutes of the clock to earn its third win of the season. The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when RIT begins Liberty League play at defending conference champion St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
