Volleyball rolls to three-set wins over Hilbert and Hartwick to finish 2-2 at Golden Flyer Invitational

Laiz Novaes named to the All-Tournament Team

PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT volleyball team (5-4) rolled to a consecutive three-set wins over Hilbert (0-7) and Hartwick (2-7) on day two at the Golden Flyer Invitational hosted by Nazareth College. RIT finished the weekend with a 2-2 mark. Senior Laiz Novaes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Centro Educational) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers upended Hilbert by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-18. In the opening set, Hilbert held an 11-10 lead before RIT rattled off the next six points and 15 of the next 20 to earn the win. In set two, RIT trailed 12-10 before scoring four straight to take a 14-12 lead. With RIT leading 20-19, they rattled off the final five points of the set. The Tigers scored eight straight points in the final set to go up 16-8 and never look back.

Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a career-high .778 in the middle, with a team-high seven kills in just nine attempts. Novaes hit .417 with six kills, while Sara Taylor (Tonanwanda, NY/Kenmore East) added eight digs and six kills. Amy Van Hienen (Castor, Alberta/Gus Wetter) recorded 10 digs, five kills, and four service aces, while Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 24 assists. Defensively, Abby Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) had 14 digs.

Morgan Ott led Hilbert with 11 kills and added 10 digs, while Kamalei Lene dished out 17 assists.

"I thought our energy was better this morning (vs. Hilbert)," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "We also did a better job of getting more of our attackers involved in the offense. This was a good step at becoming an improved team."

Against Hartwick, RIT used a big 9-2 run in the first set en route to the 25-20 victory on set one. In set two, RIT led the whole way en route to the 25-17 victory. Set three was tied 19-19 before the Tigers scored the final six points, including the final three on kills from Novaes assisted from Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) to win.

Novaes led RIT with 14 kills and added 10 digs, while Taylor Harkness (Batavia, NY/Batavia) hit .353 with six kills. Wheeler and Taylor had five kills apiece, while Liz Wunder (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) hit .667 with four kills. Parkinson led RIT with 25 assists to go along with 10 digs, while Higgins had a team-high 12 digs with two service aces. Aleah Chinn (Wichita, KS/Witchita Southeast) led the Tigers with a pair of blocks.

Kayla Barli led Hartwick with seven kills, while Alyssa Zeitler had 15 digs.

"I thought we improved again this match (vs. Hartwick)," said Lodes. "Our passing and defense allowed us to get everyone involved offensively. We especially did a good job of getting our middle hitters the ball. I hope this is a big step in the right direction."

Yesterday, RIT fell to Medaille in three sets and host Nazareth in four sets to kick off the Golden Flyer Invitational.

RIT returns to action on Friday and Saturday, as they host the RIT Invitational. The Tigers play Alfred and St. John Fisher on Friday and Oneonta State and Buffalo State on Saturday. Action begins at 3 p.m. on Friday.
