ALFRED, NY – The RIT softball team (14-22) wrapped up the 2015 season by splitting a doubleheader at Alfred State College (12-24) at Pioneer Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Alfred State snapped RIT's five-game winning streak in game one, 3-1, while RIT took game two, 8-5.
In game two, RIT took advantage of five Alfred State errors to score three unearned runs. The Tigers broke the game open with six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
RIT hurler
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) won her fourth straight decision to end the season, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out eight batters over six innings of work. She threw the first five innings and came back in the seventh to close out the contest.
Heather Williams (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) gave up three runs in her one inning of work.
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ), playing in her final collegiate game, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Classmate
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), also playing in her final contest, went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Leadoff hitter
McKenzie Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) launched her team best third home run of the season and scored a pair of runs.
Destiny Pacheco (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) drove in a pair of runs.
In game one, Alfred State hurler Rebecca Hanrahan quieted the hot RIT bats, allowing just four hits and an unearned run, while striking out four batters in a complete-game win. Claire Hartman was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Pioneers.
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) got the start on the mound for RIT, allowing three hits and a run in two innings.
Deanna Johnston (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) pitched the final four innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out two batters, taking the loss.
Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was 2-for-3 with a RIT's lone run scored. Pacheco and
Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had RIT's other hits.
Today marked the final games for seniors Wolcott and Meegan. Wolcott finished her career as RIT's all-time leader with 48 walks and 42 doubles, hitting .343 with eight home runs and 77 RBIs. Meegan played in 92 career contests.
