ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (11-21) celebrated Senior Day by sweeping visiting Nazareth College (13-19) by scores of 2-0 and 6-4 at Tiger Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Between games, RIT honored seniors
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ) and
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), both of whom played large roles in today's sweep.
In game one, Meegan started by making a sensational over the shoulder grab in the second inning, taking away a potential extra base hit away from Sophia Rhoades.
Wolcott broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a towering home run over the center field fence to lead off the inning. It was her first home run of the season and seventh of her RIT career, moving her into eighth all-time at the university. Later in the day, Wolcott would hit her 40th career double, moving her into a tie for the all-time lead at RIT with Josa Hanzlik, who played from 2004-07.
The following inning,
McKenzie Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) drove in
Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Freshman hurler
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) was sensational for the Tigers, allowing just a third inning single to Meghan Barry and sixth inning single to Morgan Ross. Mahar walked just one batter and struck out six for her second shutout of the season and eighth victory of the year. All three of Nazareth's base runners did not advance past first base.
Nicole White took the loss for the Golden Flyers, allowing five hits and an earned run, while striking out five batters in six innings.
In game two, RIT opened up a 3-0 lead after four innings, as Wolcott drove in Martin with a run-scoring ground out in the first inning, Sarles knocked in Wolcott with a RBI triple in the fourth, and Libby plated Sarles with a sacrifice fly later in the frame.
Nazareth came storming back with four unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Ross hit a pop up that was dropped, allowing two runs to score, cutting the RIT lead to 3-2. Two batters later, Maureen Rogers ripped a double into the gap in right center field, driving in two more runs.
RIT would come right back in the bottom of the inning and take the lead for good.
Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) led off with a double and came around to score on a double by Wolcott. With two outs,
Brooke Kaminski (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) slammed a double off the wall in right field, scoring Wolcott and
Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) to make it 6-4 Tigers.
Kaminski was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in her best hitting performance at RIT to date. Wolcott was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Blaker had a pair of hits and a stolen base.
On the mound,
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) picked up her second win in as many days, scattering seven hits and four unearned runs in the seven inning complete-game, with five strikeouts.
RIT leads the all-time series between the schools, 14-11-1. Both were rivals with the Empire 8 conference from 2007-2011.
RIT is back in action on Tuesday with a pair of home contests vs. Houghton College that get underway at 3 p.m.
