ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT (16-0, 7-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team completed a perfect regular season with an 18-12 win over St. Lawrence University (9-7, 5-2 Liberty League) on Senior Day at Tiger Stadium. RIT enters the postseason 16-0, and has won 40 straight regular season games. The Tigers clinched their fourth straight Liberty League regular season title and will host Clarkson in the conference semifinals.
Shots were 51-41 in favor of St. Lawrence, while RIT held a 51-45 ground ball edge, and cleared the ball 19-of-21 times. Sophomore
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led RIT with six points on three goals and three assists. Senior
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) dished out four assists, while
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) and
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) each tallied three goals.
Cory Ashmore (Sutton, Ontario/Sutton District),
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) and
Alec Sulesky (Medina, OH/Medina) each scored a pair of goals.
Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) each dished out a pair of assists.
Conor Healey led St. Lawrence with five points on three goals and two assists. Jon Fairbanks and Tommy Hovey each tallied a pair of goals, while Jordan Dow added a goal and two assists. Nick Ford got the start in net for the Saints. He took the loss, making seven saves.
RIT was tied 3-3 after the first quarter, led 10-6 at the half, 14-8 after three quarters of play and each team scored four times in the final quarter for an 18-12 final. Sulesky got the scoring started on his sixth goal of the season at the 14:15 mark of the first quarter.
Charlie Duprey answered for the Saints, tallying his 18th goal at the 13:05 mark. Sulesky tallied his second goal of the quarter on a nice sweeping move from midfield, giving RIT a 2-1 lead. Hovey took a pass from Dow and beat RIT goalie
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) for man-up goal, tying the game at 2-2.
Mikey Gulasey (Medina, OH/Western Reserve Academy) gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead on his 10th goal of the season with 2:48 to play in the opening quarter. Chris Anklin tied the score at 3-3 with his fourth goal of the season late in the quarter.
RIT, the highest scoring offense in all of Division III, scored seven times in the second quarter, opening up a four-goal halftime lead. Ashmore opened the scoring in the second quarter when he scored off a feed from Lee, giving RIT a 4-3 lead. Charlie Jennings tied the score at 4-4 on his 12th goal of the season with 13:22 to play in the half. Aquin and Jeremy Vautour each scored, before a three-goal burst by the Tigers gave RIT a little separation. Lee scored two of the three goals, while Levick scored off an assist from Hossack with 5:06 to play in the half, extending the RIT lead to 8-5.
Fairbanks stopped the RIT run with his goal with 3:57 to play in the half. Lee and Warren each scored in the final minutes of the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 10-6 halftime lead.
Healey opened the second half scoring, tallying his27th goal of the season at the 11:51 mark of the third quarter, and cutting the RIT lead to 10-7. The Tigers extended their lead, scoring three straight goals, going up 13-7 on Aquin's second goal of the game.
Ashmore and Warren also scored in the run for RIT. Healey tallied with 5:06 to play in the third quarter, pulling the Saints to within 13-8. Levick closed out the scoring in the third quarter on his second of the game and 29th overall giving the Tigers a 14-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
Each team scored four times in the fourth quarter. Warren,
Zack Thompson (Orangeville, Ontario/Culver Academy),
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Levick each scored for RIT, while Hovey, Healey, Dow and Fairbanks scored for the Saints.
Senior
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) picked up his 16th win of the season and 51st in his career in net for the Tigers, making 19 saves. He is now 51-4 in his career with a .927 winning percentage. Freshman
Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) won 9-of-19 face-offs and had two ground balls.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) led RIT with seven ground balls and caused five turnovers.
Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas), Lee and
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) each had five ground balls for the Tigers, while Gillies and
Jay Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) each caused two turnovers.
RIT improves to 21-14 all time versus St. Lawrence. They have scored in double figures all 16 games this season and have an 11-game stretch of scoring at least 15 goals. The Tigers lead all of Division I in scoring, averaging 18 goals per game.
