ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (8-20) dropped a pair of non-conference contests against SUNY Geneseo (22-9), 7-3 and 6-3 at Tiger Stadium on a cold, windy Wednesday afternoon. The Knights extended their winning streak to 18 games with the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, Geneseo raced to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, as Cat Krok slammed a three-run home run to right field. Ashley Fillmore was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Emily Martin was 3-for-4.
Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) and
Amber Libby (Waterboro, ME/Massabesic) had two hits apiece for the Tigers in game one. Blaker scored twice, while
McKenzie Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) drove in a run.
Alexis Kidder started for the Knights and allowed four hits and two unearned runs in three innings, Corrin Spallone came on in relief and earned her 13th win of the season, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out three batters over four innings.
RIT hurler
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) had her five-game winning streak snapped, allowing 11 hits and seven runs, while striking out eight batters.
In game two, Geneseo jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring three times in the third inning before RIT tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) and
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) hit back-to-back doubles to make it 3-1.
Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) reached on an error with the bases loaded with two outs, scoring
Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West).
Geneseo would re-take the lead in the fifth inning, as Claire Vannewkirk singled to right field, scoring Martin to make it 4-3. Presutti perfected a suicide squeeze bunt in the sixth inning, scoring Taylor Knowles to make it 5-3. Vannewkirk would close out the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Cook was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Tigers.
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the loss on the mound for RIT, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs, while striking out five batters.
Olivia Furness started and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and an earned run, while striking out five batters. Mikayla Moore earned the win, allowing an unearned run over the final 3 2/3 innings.
RIT returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Liberty League foe Rochester, starting at 1 p.m. RIT needs to win both games to have a chance to qualify for the Liberty League Tournament.
