Softball plays first two games of season up north, dropping doubleheader at Alfred

ALFRED, NY - The RIT softball team (3-9) played its first two games up north on Thursday afternoon, dropping a pair of non-conference contests at Alfred University (12-2). The Saxons won game one, 6-1 and took game two, 3-2.

In game one, Alfred scored a run in each of the first two innings before RIT got on the board in the sixth inning, courtesy of a run-scoring single from Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast), scoring Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West), who reached on an error. The Saxons would respond with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away.

Alfred out-hit RIT, 12-3. Liz Thompson was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Saxons. On the mound, Alison Wickwire was able to shut the Tigers down, allowing three hits and an unearned run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts.

Cook, Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), and Blaker had the RIT hits. On the mound, Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the complete-game loss.

In game two, Alfred scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before the Tigers tied the game in the top of the second, as Katelyn Koester (Amherst, NY/St. Mary's School for the Deaf) singled in pinch-runner Kaylee Mathews (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley). After Alfred scored twice in the third inning to go up 3-1. Brooke Kaminski (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh inning with her first collegiate home run.

Killian was 2-for-3 for the Tigers, while Libby and Blaker also had hits. On the mound, Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) pitched well, allowing three runs in the complete-game loss.

Kerri Keeler earned the win on the mound for Alfred, scattering six hits in the complete game. Thompson was 2-for=3 with two runs scored, while Dana Torchia drove in a pair of runs.

The Tigers were scheduled to go to St. Lawrence on Saturday, but that has been postponed. Next up for the Tigers is a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Fredonia on Tuesday from Tiger Stadium that gets underway at 3 p.m.
