CANTON, NY – The RIT softball team (4-14, 1-5 Liberty League) recorded its first Liberty League win of the 2015 season, recording a split at league foe St. Lawrence (9-8, 3-3 Liberty League) on Wednesday afternoon. St. Lawrence won game one, 1-0, while the Tigers rebounded to win game two, 5-0.
Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) recorded three hits, including a pair of doubles in the twin bill for the Tigers.
In game one, St. Lawrence scored the lone run in the bottom of the third inning, as Jordan Sheridan singled and moved to third on an error. Aisha O'Connor drove in the lone run with one out, grounding out to second, scoring Sheridan.
RIT had their chances throughout, but left seven runners on base, including runners on second and third in the fourth inning.
Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was 2-for-3 with a double, while
Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West),
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), and
Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) also had hits.
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) was tremendous on the mound in the tough luck loss for RIT, allowing just two hits, while walking a pair of batters and striking out three in the complete-game six inning effort. Valentine was efficient, needing just 67 pitches for her eighth complete-game of the season.
Kyle Plimpton improved to 9-5 on the season, scattering five hits, while walking two batters and striking out nine in the 113-pitch shutout.
In game two, RIT scored for the first time in 25 innings dating back to Saturday, as Blaker hit a one-out single and moved to second on an error and scored on a double to center field by Sarles.
Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) would single down the left field line, driving in Sarles to make it 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
RIT would add on to the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs to make it 4-0. Singles by Cook and Lunderman and a ground out gave RIT runners at second and third with two outs. Farner would lace a single in the right center field, plating both runs. Blaker would single in Farner in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.
RIT hurler
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) was excellent in game two, scattering just three hits and two walks, while striking out four batters for her third win of the season and first collegiate shutout. Mahar has allowed just one run over her last 15 innings.
Blaker was 2-for-4 with a run scored and driven in. RIT would out-hit St. Lawrence, 9-3 in game two, and 14-5 overall on Wednesday.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 6-5.
The Tigers are right back in action on Thursday with a home doubleheader against non-league foe Medaille. Game one begins at 3 p.m., while game two, a Tiger Den event, starts at 5 p.m.
