SYRACUSE, NY -- Sophomores
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/Huron Heights) each scored five goals, helping the No. 2 RIT (1-0) men's lacrosse team to a 17-10 win over No. 4 Stevenson University (0-1) at The Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University on Monday afternoon.
Stevenson led 4-3 after the first quarter, but RIT outscored the Mustangs 4-1 in the second quarter to lead 7-5 at the half. The Tigers led 10-6 after the third quarter, and turned it on in the fourth quarter, tallying seven goals for the 17-10 win.
"We played hard all game long," said RIT head coach
Jake Coon. "We out-worked them at times, which is a good sign for us. We just need to cut down on the turnovers."
Stevenson held a 51-42 shot advantage, and won the ground ball battle, 46-44. The Tigers won 16-of-31 face-offs, with
Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) going 9-of-17, and
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) was 7-of-14 from the face-off "X". The Tigers went 22-of-24 on clearing attempts, while holding Stevenson to 22-of-31 on clears. RIT 's man-up was sharp, converting 6-of-8. RIT did turn the ball over 31 times to 24 from Stevenson.
"I thought our man-up was on fire," said Coon. "Very impressive work by that unit today."
Lee led the Tigers with a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Levick added five goals in his first game in an RIT uniform, while
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) added three goals and two assists.
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a goal and an assist, and
Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with a goal and three assists.
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) also dished out three assists for the Tigers, who assisted on 14-of-17 goals.
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) was excellent in net for RIT, making 19 saves, earning his first win of the season.
"Pat made some big saves," said Coon. "He played with confidence today and I thought our defense played very well overall."
Colin Dabney led the Mustangs with four goals. Stephen Banick added four assists, while Billy Burgoyne scored a pair of goals. Ben Richards took the loss in net, making 11 saves.
Stevenson led 4-3 after one quarter of play thanks to a three-goal spurt. Trailing 3-1, Pat Condon, Dabney and Kyle D'Onofrio tallied consecutive goals for the Mustangs. Lee,
Alec Sulesky (Medina, OH/Medina) and Warren each scored for the Tigers in the opening quarter.
RIT answered back with four goals in the second quarter, taking a 7-5 lead at the break. Gillies opened the scoring with a man-up goal off a feed from Lee at 12:26, tying the score at 4-4.
After a Burgoyne goal gave the Mustangs a 5-4 lead, consecutive goals from Warren, Lee and Levick gave the Tigers a two-goal cushion at halftime. The Tigers scored on all three of their man-up chances in the first half. Levick's goal at the end of the half, came off a loose ball in the Stevenson end. He scooped up the loose ball and beat Richards in a 1-on-1 situation for the goal.
Levick opened the second-half scoring on his second goal of the contest off a feed from Kiesa, extending the Tigers lead to 8-5. Dabney broke the run for the Mustangs, tallying an unassisted goal at 11:10 of the third quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 8-6. Levick scored at 8:52 of the third quarter off a feed from Kiesa, making it 9-6 RIT. Lee tallied another man-up goal, this time off an assist from Sterzin, making it 10-6 Tigers.
Matt Tompkins tallied a man-up goal with 1:16 to play in the the third quarter, making it 10-7 Tigers. Levick scored two of RIT's three goals in the third quarter, finishing with four goals in the second half.
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) won the opening face-off of the fourth quarter, scooped up the ground ball and beat Richards high to the right with a whistling shot, giving the Tigers the momentum and an 11-7 lead.
Candon answered for Stevenson with his second goal of the game at 12:04 of the fourth quarter, making it 11-8 RIT. The Tigers ran off four straight goals, taking a commanding 15-8 lead on Levick's third goal of the half off a feed from Gillies. Lee tallied two of RIT's goals in the run, one off a feed from
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park), the other from Warren. The second Lee goal was off the hidden ball trick, as he and Warren worked the play to perfection, as everyone slid to the left, where Warren faked a dodge. Lee found himself with the ball, all alone and from 30-yards out, calmly rolled it into the open goal to make it 14-8.
Burgoyne added a man-up goal with 5:28 to play, cutting the lead to 15-9, but Levick scored 1:05 later giving the Tigers a 16-9 lead with 4:43 to play. Dabney rounded out the Stevenson scoring with his fourth goal of the game with 3:11 to play, and Sterzin added a late man-up goal for RIT, making it a 17-10 final.
Stevenson leads the all-time series between the two schools, 3-2. This was a rematch of an overtime thriller at the Carrier Dome in 2014, with RIT coming back from four goals down late in regulation to win 15-14. These two teams also met in the 2013 NCAA National Championship game, which Stevenson won, 16-14 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 when the Tigers travel to face No. 18 Ithaca College at 12 p.m.
