ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's basketball team wrapped up the 2014-15 regular season by falling to Liberty League foe Union (16-8, 10-5 Liberty League) by a score of 55-52 in Clark Gym Friday night. RIT finishes the season with a 12-13 mark, going 10-6 in league play.
RIT shot 36.1 percent from the floor on 22-of-61 shooting. The Tigers made 4-of-18 from behind the arc and went 4-of-10 from the foul line.
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) led RIT with 18 points.
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while
Merissa Maiorano (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Kate Thompson led Union with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Amy Fisher chipped in 10 points for the Dutchwomen. Natalie Leone scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for Union who shot 37.3 percent from the floor.
RIT led early, taking a 7-1 lead on a 3-pointer from Maiorano. She scored five of RIT's first seven points to give the Tigers and early lead. Meghan Erdman tied the score at 7-7 on her jumper off an assist from Jenni Barra with the 11:30 mark of the first half.
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) gave RIT a 17-13 lead with 6:35 to play in the first half on her 3-pointer off an assist from
Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy). Union answered back, outscoring RIT 14-4 over the final 6:35 to take a 27-21 halftime lead. Leone's layup with 3:10 to play in the opening half gave the Dutchwomen the lead for good.
RIT shot 32.0 percent from the floor in the first half on 8-of-25 shooting. Glaz led RIT with seven points, while Maiorano and Palmitesso each tallied five. Barra paced the Dutchwomen with eight first-half points.
Union took a 40-32 lead at the 13:22 mark of the second half on a 3-pointer from Fisher. The Tigers responded with a 12-6 run, pulling to within two points on a jumper from Palmitesso. In all, the Tigers would get to within two points of the Dutchwomen three times in the second half. The last coming when Palmitesso drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to play, pulling to within 54-52.
RIT fouled on the inbounds pass to put the Dutchwomen on the line. Thompson made 1-of-2 free throws making it 55-52 Union with :09 to play. After a RIT timeout, Palmitesso got the ball and fired a three at the buzzer, but the shot came off the rim giving Union the 3-point win.
Union held 43-39 rebounding edge, tallying 20 points in the paint. The Tigers scored 26 of their 52 points in the paint and 14 points off of nine Dutchwomen turnovers.
