Women's basketball goes on the road and loses at Vassar, 60-49

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The RIT women's basketball team (10-12, 4-9 Liberty League) lost at Vassar College (9-13, 4-9 Liberty League) Friday evening, 60-49. The Brewers sweep the season series versus the Tigers, as Vassar has now won all eight contests in the all-time series.

RIT shot 30.0 percent from the floor on 18-of-60 shooting. The Tigers were 4-of-12 from behind the arc, and 9-of-14 from the foul line. Merissa Maiorano (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Mendon) led the Tigers with a double-double, pouring in 12 points and adding 13 rebounds. Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) tallied 17 points, while Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) each scored 10 points.

Caitlin Drakeley led Vassar with 23 points and seven rebounds. Allyson Pemberton added 13 points, while Rose Serafini chipped in 12 points for the Brewers who shot 41.8 percent from the floor.

RIT fell behind early in the game as Vassar took an 11-point lead on a pair of free throws by Serafini at the 13:31 mark of the first half. A Palmitesso three with 11:24 to play capped off an 8-2 run by the Tigers, pulling RIT to within 19-14. Wolcott cut the Vassar lead to 19-16 on her layup with 5:07 remaining in the first half.
 
Vassar outscored RIT 11-5 over the final six minutes, taking a 30-21 lead into halftime. The Tigers shot 24.2 percent from the floor in the opening half on 8-of-33 shooting. Maiorano led RIT with eight points, while Palmitesso scored seven points.
 
Vassar maintained its halftime lead into the second half until Palmitesso drained a 3-pointer with 14:22 to play, cutting the Brewers lead to 38-32. Glaz made it 38-33 Vassar on her free throw with 13:55 to play in regulation.

Vassar extended the lead back to 10-points when Blakeley drained a jumper off a feed from Samarah Cook with 7:44 to play. RIT fought back, cutting the Vassar lead to five points at 52-47 on a pair of free throws from Palmitesso. Late in regulation, Glaz made a pair of free throws after being fouled while shooting a 3-pointer, cutting the Vassar lead to 53-48 with 2:15 to play.

The Brewers scored the final seven points of the game going onto the 11-point win. The Tigers tallied 20 points in the paint and got nine points off of 16 Brewers turnovers.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 with a road contest at league foe Bard College that gets underway at 2 p.m.
