ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team takes on non-conference foe Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of the ECAC in a pair of contests from the Gene Polisseni Center this weekend. The Tigers and Engineers faceoff at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 and conclude the weekend series at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.
It is double feature weekend at RIT. Any fan that buys a ticket in person from the Gene Polisseni Center box office on Friday receives a free ticket to Saturday's game.
RIT (1-1-0) opened the 2015-16 regular season with a weekend split against Minnesota State last Friday and Saturday. On Friday, down 1-0 in the third period, the Tigers scored two goals, including the game winner by
Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby Collegiate) with 21 seconds left in regulation.
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) scored the tying goal, for RIT's first goal of the season.
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) picked up the win, stopping 26 out of 27 shots. On Saturday, the Tigers fell to the Mavericks, 4-2. Down 3-0,
Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) scored on the power play and
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) netted a shorthanded goal to bring RIT back in it, before Minnesota State regained its two-goal lead late in the third.
First year forward
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) was named the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week on Monday after recording two assists in the two games last weekend.
Rensselaer (0-2-0) started the season with two losses last weekend, falling to No. 6 North Dakota by scores of 4-3 and 4-1. Alexa Gruschow leads the team in scoring with three points on a goal and two assists. Four different players have scored a goal in the two games this season. Freshman goaltender Lovisa Selander has had both starts in net, and is third in the ECAC with 75 saves, for a save percentage of .915. Last season, the Engineers finished with a record of 7-23-4 (5-16-1 in the ECAC).
RIT is 14-7-4 all-time against RPI. Last season, the two teams met on Nov. 28-29. The Tigers fell in the opener, 4-1, before responding the next day with a 3-0 shutout victory.
Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy) scored a pair of goals in the 3-0 win, while
Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) also added a goal, and
Jetta Rackleff (Bend, OR/Summit) stopped all 20 shots in the shutout. The two teams were previously rivals in the ECAC East conference before Rensselaer made the move up to Division I in 2005.
