Women's soccer falls to No. 5 William Smith 1-0 on Senior Day at Tiger Stadium

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (12-3-2, 6-1-1 Liberty League) women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a 1-0 loss to No. 5 William Smith College (14-1-1, 8-0-0 Liberty League). The Tigers honored the senior class of Jenn Kane (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport), Jess Lesczynski (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac), Quincey Orenellas, Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), and Sarah Stoltzfus (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) prior to the game as their final regular season home game at Tiger Stadium.

William Smith wrapped up the top-seed in next week's Liberty League Championship Tournament, while RIT is the No. 2 seed.

Shots were 11-6 in favor of the Herons, who took seven corner kicks to four for the Tigers. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) took the loss in net for RIT, making four saves. Kaileen Murray played the first 45 minutes for William Smith. Veronica Romines played the second half and picked up the win for William Smith, making one save.

William Smith had a good chance early in the game when Krista Longo had a header off a Heron corner kick that went just wide of the net.

RIT had a good chance 30 minutes into the game when Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) sent in a service from the flank. Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) got a touch on the ball, but could not control enough to get a shot away.

The best scoring chance for either team came late in the opening half on a William Smith set piece. Bridget Westerman snuck into the open space inside the RIT box and received the pass at about the penalty spot. Rogers came off her line to cut down the angle and made the save on the shot, keeping the game scoreless.

Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had a chance at the end of the first half when she flung a bicycle kick that just missed the William Smith cross bar.

The Tigers best chance came in the second half on a corner kick. Courtney Hunt (Brockport, NY/Brockport) sent in the service that May headed toward the Herons net. Her shot was blocked down and the ball was loose inside the six-yard box. Nobody could get a clean shot away and the Herons defense knocked it out for a RIT corner kick.

Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had a good look from 15 yards out with 19 minutes to play, but her shot was at Romines and the William Smith goalkeeper was able to make the save.

In the 73rd minute, the Herons were putting the Tigers under pressure. A Tigers defender was whistled for a trip inside the RIT penalty box, awarding a penalty kick attempt for William Smith. Longo converted the try, giving the Herons a 1-0 lead.

RIT kept after the equalizer, getting a chance with 1:15 to play when Thiel sent in a service in from the flank. Parzych got on the end of the service, but she hit her shot wide and way as the Herons were able to kill off the final minute.

Despite the loss, RIT will be the second seed in next week's Liberty League Tournament. The Tigers will host No. 3 St. Lawrence on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Tiger Stadium. Stay tuned to www.ritathletics.com for game time.
