Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Women's hockey earns weekend road sweep with 2-1 victory at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – For the second straight afternoon, the RIT women's hockey team (3-4-0) picked up a road win at ECAC rival Union (0-4-2), 2-1 on Saturday from Mezza Rink.

Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored a first period shorthanded goal, while Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) added a second period power-play goal for the Tigers to provide the offense. In goal, Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) picked up her second win of the season, stopping 22 shots. On Paton's goal, Reagan Rust (McKinney, TX/Moon Area) and Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) drew assists. Rust tallied her first collegiate point on that tally.

Kathryn Tomaselli scored Union's lone goal, on a 5-on-3 power-play midway through the third period. In net, Melissa Black stopped 29 of 31 shots.

The Tigers held a 31-23 edge in shots. RIT was 1-for-6 with the man-advantage, while Union was 1-for-8.  With the shorthanded goal, RIT has already exceeded its total from last season.

"That was another good win for us tonight," said RIT head coach Scott McDonald. "Overall, I thought we did a lot of things well. We came out hard and played with a ton of energy. We made it interesting at the end wih a couple of penalties, but stayed strong and finished the weekend off."

RIT took the lead just 2:52 into the contest, as Cornine stole an errant pass, came in alone and beat Black for her second goal in as many games. RIT would out-shoot Union, 10-2 in the period.

Paton would make it 2-0 Tigers with 4:29 left in the second period, burying a shot past Black on the power-play.

RIT leads the all-time series against Union, 9-3-1. The Tigers are 4-1-1 against Union since moving to Division I in 2012 and have won four straight, dating back to last year. The two teams were rivals in the ECAC East conference as Division III members in the early 2000's.

Yesterday, Cornine scored her first collegiate goal early in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and goaltender Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) earned her first collegiate win, as the Tigers upended Union, 3-1.

RIT is back in action next weekend with a two-game set at league foe Mercyhurst. Friday's game gets underway at 6 p.m., while Saturday's starts at 1 p.m.
