ROCHESTER, NY – On a cold and windy day at Tiger Stadium, the No. 18 RIT (8-1-1, 2-0-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team defeated Skidmore College (4-4-0, 2-1-0 Liberty League) 1-0.
Hayley Cromwell (Cave Creek, AZ/Pinnacle) scored the lone goal for RIT. The Tigers and the Thoroughbreds are tied 5-5-2 all time, with RIT winning three straight games dating back to 2013.
"The wind played a big factor today," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. "This was a good match up for us. Skidmore plays a similar style to ours and I was happy how we were able to get the win."
RIT held a slight 11-10 shot advantage. The Tigers fired five shots on net to five for the Thoroughbreds. RIT took five corner kicks to two for Skidmore.
Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the start in net for RIT, making two saves and picking up the win.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played the second half and made three saves. Deirdre Walsh took the loss for Skidmore, making four saves.
There were few scoring chances in the first half for either team.
Riley Yankowich (Norristown, PA/Germantown Academy) had a chance in the 14th minute on service from
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) who dribbled around her defender and spotted Yankowich making the run. Yankowich's shot just missed the post as it sailed wide of the net.
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had a chance in the 27th minute on a header inside the Skidmore penalty area.
Courtney Hunt (Brockport, NY/Brockport) whipped a service into the box on a corner kick. Culhane was stationed at the back post and her header hit off the post.
Skidmore's first shot on goal came in the 29th minute off the foot of Emma Basso. She fired a shot from distance that Fisher saw the whole way and gobbled up for a scoreless first half.
RIT finally broke through off a service from
Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) in the 42nd minute. Chester got around her defender out on the flank, dribbled into the Skidmore penalty area and spotted Cromwell making the run down the channel. She sent in a pass that Cromwell tapped home first-time for her first of the season, giving RIT a 1-0 lead.
"We wanted to make sure we took advantage of the wind," said Masterson. "We wanted to put as much pressure on them while we had the wind to score."
Skidmore tried to ramp up the pressure after conceding the goal, but RIT's defense was stout, holding the Thoroughbreds off the scoreboard. It is the eighth shut out of the season for the Tigers, who have allowed just two goals in 10 games this season.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when the Tigers host Liberty League rival Rensselaer at 2 p.m. on the grass at Tiger Stadium
