CANTON, NY -- In a critical Liberty League game Saturday afternoon, the RIT (10-9, 5-5 Liberty League) men's basketball team lost a heart breaker to St. Lawrence (10-9, 5-6 Liberty League), 84-81 in overtime. The Tigers led late, but a bucket by Kaleb Faison with one second in regulation off a tip-in on a missed free throw sent the game into overtime. Despite the loss, the Tigers still cling to fourth place in the Liberty League standings.
RIT shot 44.1 percent from the field on 26-of-59 shooting. The Tigers made 6-of-18 from behind the arc, and went 23-of-31 from the foul line. Horde led the Tigers with 19 points, while
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) added 18 points.
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) tallied 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and
Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) chipped in 11 points for RIT who dropped its third straight game.
Brady Condlin led St. Lawrence with 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Willie Zachery tallied 18 points, while Leondre Simmon scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds for the Saints who shot 43.8 percent from the floor.
Trailing by five late in the first half, RIT scored the final five points, including a 3-pointer from Horde with five seconds to play, tying the score at 39-39. Horde scored eight points for RIT in the first half, as the Tigers shot 44.8 percent from the floor. Davis led RIT with 11 first-half points on 4-of-8 shooting.
There were six ties and seven lead changes in a tightly contested second half. The Tigers fell behind by five early in the half on a layup by Simmon off an assist from Zachery at the 18:29 mark. The Tigers took a brief 49-47 lead with 14:56 to play on a slashing bucket by Horde.
The Saints responded with a 10-0 run, taking a 57-49 lead with 11:31 to play on a jumper from Riley Naclerio off an assist from Kobis. In a back-and-forth affair, RIT answered right back, tying the score at 59-59 on a bucket by Davis with 7:19 to play. He scored four straight points for RIT, capping off 10-2 run by the Tigers.
Horde gave the Tigers back the lead on his bucket with 6:32 to play. Stortini started the play with his steal from Kaleb Faison that led to the Horde bucket.
Matt Gundrum (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) extended the Tigers lead to 63-59 on his basket with 5:18 to play.
RIT took the lead back with 2:02 to play on a bucket from Lopez off a feed from Reagan. Horde converted two free throws with :13 to play giving the Tigers a 72-68 lead. Zachery scored for the Saints with :06 to play, cutting the RIT lead to 72-70. Stortini made 1-of-2 free throws after a Saints foul with :04 to play, giving the Tigers a 73-70 lead.
On St. Lawrence's next possession, Naclerio was fouled by Horde. Naclerio made the first free throw, cutting the lead to 73-71. After a Saints' timeout, Naclerio missed his second free throw on purpose. The miss came to Faison who laid the ball in as time expired tying the score at 73-73.
In the overtime, Stortini gave the Tigers a slim 77-76 lead when he converted a pair of free throws with 1:01 to play. With :04 to play in the overtime, Stortini was fouled by Simmon. Stortini drained both free throws, pulling the Tigers to within 82-81. But, Zachery converted both his free throws with :03 to play, giving the Saints a narrow three-point win.
The Saints held a slight 39-38 rebounding edge. The Tigers scored 38 of their 81 points in the paint, and tallied 23 points off of 12 St. Lawrence turnovers. RIT falls to 27-31 all time versus St. Lawrence.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6 when the Tigers host Liberty League foe, Rensselaer at 8 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
