Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Emilee Bulleid and Marissa Maugeri lift women's hockey to 4-3 overtime win over Syracuse

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior defenseman Emilee Bulleid (Waterdown, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) scored her second goal of the game, 2:18 into overtime to lift the RIT women's hockey team (9-14-3, 3-8-1 CHA) to a wild, 4-3 win over Syracuse University (6-12-8, 4-4-4 CHA) in front of 1,010 fans at the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday evening.

With RIT leading 3-2 late in the third period, Syracuse received a power-play and with 11.3 seconds left in regulation Melissa Piacentini tipped in a shot from Nicole Renault with the goaltender pulled to tie the game at 3-3, sending it to overtime.

In overtime, Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) broke up a Syracuse clearing attempt while falling to the ice, kicking a pass to Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) just inside the Orange zone. Wallace came in with Bulleid on a 2-on-1 and made the pass to the RIT defenseman, who from the slot, ripped a perfect wrist shot over the glove of Syracuse goaltender Jenn Gilligan, just under the crossbar for her second goal of the game, giving RIT the win. The assist was the first of Wallace's collegiate career.

Bulleid, who had scored one goal over her last 105 games, tallied a career-high two goals. Classmate Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) tied a career-high with three points on two goals and an assist and was plus-3. She now has 10 points (4-6-10) in her last six games against the Orange. Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) added two assists, giving her 99 career points. In goal, Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) stopped 24 shots to earn the win.

Senior forward Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) played in her 130th career game, surpassing Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) for the RIT career record in that category.

Piacentini scored her team-best 14th goal of the season and added an assist for the Orange, while Heather Schwartz and Jessica Sibley also scored. In net, Gilligan made 17 saves.

Syracuse out-shot RIT, 27-21. The Orange were 2-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Syracuse was 0-for-3.

"That's a huge win for us," said RIT head coach Scott McDonald. "It was a really good effort, back and forth on both sides. We responded every time Syracuse scored and refused to lose. I thought our defense really jumped into the play and our forwards played at the level we should be playing at. Everyone needs to be on board and give this effort the rest of the way."

RIT led 2-1 after one period of play with Syracuse holding an 11-6 edge in shots.

The Orange had a great chance just over a minute into the contest, when Piacentini fired a shot from the slot on the rush that Binnington stopped, but the puck jumped over and behind the RIT goaltender towards the goal line. Fortunately for Binnington, the puck came down and caromed back under her pads.

RIT got on the board first at the 14:45 mark, just after a Syracuse penalty expired, as Maugeri picked up a loose puck out of the corner and ripped a rocket of a wrist shot from the left face-off circle past Gilligan for her fifth goal of the season. Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) sent a pass to Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy) at the left point. Brown had her shot blocked, with Maugeri picking the puck up and swooping to the circle before scoring the goal.

Syracuse would tie the game at 1-1 with 2:03 left in the period, as Schwartz would backhand a shot past Binnington from in tight after her initial shot went off teammate Danielle Leslie. Megan Quinn also assisted on the goal, Schwartz's second of the season.

Just 48 seconds later, RIT would regain the lead, as Bulleid jammed in a pass from Maugeri in front for her first goal of the season. Christa Vuglar (Crystal Lake, IL/Chicago Mission) tipped a pass to Maugeri in the neutral zone, creating a 2-on-1 rush. Maugeri tried to pass across, but it was blocked to the side of the net. Maugeri got to the loose puck and fired a pass to Bulleid, who was all alone on the doorstep for the goal.

Both teams would score once in the second period, as RIT headed to the dressing room up 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

The Orange would tie the game on the power-play at the 5:01 mark, as Sibley came from behind the net to beat Binnington on a wrap-around for her seventh goal of the year. Stephanie Grossi and Piacentini cycled behind the net with the latter getting Sibley the pass for the goal.

Maugeri would give RIT its third lead of the game just 2:53 later, jamming home a pass from Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) in front for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Great work by Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and McCrea behind the Syracuse net set up the goal, as with a defender draped on her Maugeri got just enough to get it past Gilligan.

After RIT took the lead, Binnington had to make two big saves on a Syracuse power-play later in the second. Her first great save came on Julie Knerr, who got behind the RIT defense and tried to beat Binnington high, but she smothered the shot. Binnington then made a great pad save on Allie Lacombe from the slot.

Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two schools, 6-4-1. It was the second of four meetings between the two schools this season, as Syracuse defeated RIT 4-2 on Dec. 6. In that game, Alysha Burris had the hat-trick for Syracuse, as the Orange scored three times to break a 1-1 tie in the third period. Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) and Maugeri scored for the Tigers.

Nine of the 11 previous games between the two schools ended in a tie or one goal difference, with six going to overtime. RIT went 3-1 against Syracuse last season. The two teams wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series against each other on Feb. 20-21.

The win was RIT's first in overtime this season. Bulleid's overtime winner was the first in the extra session at the Gene Polisseni Center for the Tigers. The four goals scored were a season-high at home this season for RIT.

RIT goes back on the road next weekend to face CHA rival Lindenwood for a pair of games. Friday's game gets underway at 8 p.m. EST and Saturday's contest starts at 4 p.m. EST.
