WALTHAM, MA – Host Bentley (11-10-3, 9-6-3 AHC) scored a goal in each of the first two periods to bulid a two-goal lead and hung on in the third to earn a 2-1 win over the RIT men's hockey team (8-11-4, 7-6-4 AHC) Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at the John A. Ryan Skating Center. The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for RIT.
Andrew Miller (Chicago, IL/Chicago Steel) scored RIT's lone goal 5:06 into the final period, cutting the Bentley lead to 2-1.
Brandon Thompson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Handsworth) passed the puck from down low to
Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers) at the point, who fired a hard shot that Bentley goaltender Gabe Antoni stopped. Miller was right there at the doorstep to put the rebound past Antoni for his fifth goal of the season.
The Tigers had several chances tie the game and took a 15-4 advantage in shots in the third but were not able to get the big goal.
RIT out-shot the Falcons 33-17, keeping them to four shots in the first and third periods. RIT was 0-for-3 on the man-advantage and Bentley was 0-for-4. RIT's penalty-kill was perfect, not allowing Bentley to get any shots off during their power-plays. It was the second time in the last four games that RIT allowed fewer than 2-0 shots in a game.
Senior
Jordan Ruby (Tavistock, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) made 15 saves in the loss for RIT, while Antoni made 32 stops for the win, and was named the game's first star.
"Overall, I thought we played a really good game tonight," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We were very strong defensively, limiting them to very few shots but we got distracted. We need to focus on the task at hand and get better results tomorrow night."
In the opening period, Ryan McMurphy scored with 1:02 left on the clock to put the Falcons on the board. Just 2:08 into the second, following a successful RIT penalty kill, Charlie Donners fired a shot from up top that picked the bottom left corner of the net that gives the Falcons a 2-0 edge.
On a 4-on-4 in the second,
Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings) dished the puck to
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) coming down the right side. Mitchell took the puck behind goal line and dished it to Garbowsky cutting in front, who just missed the tap in.
Alex Perron-Fontaine (St. Mathieu de Beloeil, Quebec/Chilliwack Chiefs) also got a good look in the second, breaking up the left side of the ice and rocketing a shot off the near post.
RIT is now 16-9-2 all-time against Bentley. The Tigers lost the previous two meetings with the Falcons at the John A. Ryan Skating Center last season.
The two teams complete the regular season series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. from the JAR.
