Cold late shooting dooms men's basketball in loss to Clarkson

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (7-5, 2-2 Liberty League) men's basketball team fell to Clarkson University (9-2, 2-0 Liberty League), 68-57 in Liberty League action from Clark Gym on Saturday. The Tigers fall to 46-31 all-time versus the Golden Knights.

RIT shot 41.8 percent from the floor on 23-of-55 shooting. The Tigers went 4-of-16 from behind the arc, and were 7-of-8 from the foul line. The Golden Knights held a 40-27 rebounding advantage. Sophomore Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) led RIT with 12 points. Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) added 10 points, while AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each tallied seven points. Horde finished with a team-high five assists.

RIT never led in the first half, falling behind by as many as 16 points. Dylan Hodownes scored on a layup at the 6:29 mark of the first half, giving Clarkson a 30-14 lead.

RIT cut the lead in half to eight points with a 6-2 mini burst at the end of the half. A pair of Casey Bobelis (Bradenton, FL/Braden River) free throws with 1:02 to play cut the Clarkson lead to 36-28 at the break.
 
RIT shot 40.0 percent from the floor in the opening half on 12-of-30 shooting. The Tigers made just 1-of-7 from behind the arc and were 3-for-3 from the foul line. Davis led a balanced RIT scoring attack with five points. John Coleman scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half to pace the Golden Knights.

The Tigers opened the second half with an 8-0 run, tying the score at 36-36 on a pair of free throws by Matt Gundrum (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow). He scored five of RIT's first eight points of the second half.

A quick 7-1 burst by Clarkson opened the Golden Knights lead back to five points on a layup by Coleman with 15:06 to play. The Tigers took their first lead at the 10:17 mark of the second half on a jumper by Stortini. Bobelis gave the Tigers a 55-53 lead with 7:24 to play off an assist from Stortini.

RIT went cold from the floor down the stretch as Clarkson outscored the Tigers 14-2 over the final 7:08 for the 11-point win.

The Tigers scored 24 points in the paint and 15 points off 10 Clarkson turnovers. RIT scored nine second chance points and got 26 points off the bench.

RIT returns to action on Tuesday, January 13 when the Tigers host Hobart College at 8 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
