POTSDAM, NY -- The RIT (4-5, 1-2 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was beaten by Clarkson (4-6, 1-3 Liberty League) 9-4 in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored just one second-half goal despite firing 12 shots.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with three goals, while
Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) scored the other Tigers goal.
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) took the loss in net, making five saves.
Clarkson held a slight 20-19 shot advantage, and won the ground ball battle 14-10. RIT won nine draw controls, and were 10-of-14 on clearing attempts. The Tigers went 3-for-8 on free position attempts, and committed 16 turnovers.
Clarkson took a 2-0 lead early in the first half on a pair of goals from Ashley Flick. She scored her first off an assist from Christine Wright at 28:51, and tallied her second off an assist from Paige Fayette at 24:22.
Sarkis pulled RIT to within a goal with her 33rd goal of the season at 23:36 of the first half. Emma Jeffery gave the Golden Knights a 4-2 lead at 22:39 off an assist from Fayette. Leone converted a free position attempt at 20:66 of the first half, pulling RIT to within one goal at 3-2.
Wright and Flick scored consecutive goals for Clarkson at 13:44 and 7:33 off feeds from Fayette giving Clarkson a 5-2 lead. Sarkis scored her second of the half off a free position try with 5:38 to play to make it 5-3 Clarkson at the half.
Fayette opened the second-half scoring with her first goal of the game just one minute into the half, increasing the Golden Knights lead to 6-3. Jeffery made it 7-3 Clarkson on her second goal of the game at 26:46. Danielle Faivus made it 8-3 on her eighth goal of the season off an assist from Wright at 24:49.
Sarkis broke the Clarkson scoring run with her third goal of the game and 35th of the season at 17:57, making it 8-4. Jeffery added a ninth goal for Clarkson at 4:33 making it a 9-4 final.
Jeffery and Flick led Clarkson with three goals apiece. Wright scored a goal and dished out four assists, while Dani Tani picked up the win in net, making eight saves.
RIT is now 5-2 all-time against the Golden Knights. The Tigers fell to Liberty League foe St. Lawrence, 11-9 on Friday.
RIT returns to action on Friday, April 11 when the Tigers host Rensselaer at 4 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
