Sarkis surpasses 100 career goals, as women's lacrosse closes out season with loss at Vassar



POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The RIT (5-10, 2-7 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team closed out the 2014 season Saturday with an 11-9 loss at Vassar College (11-4, 6-3 Liberty League). The Tigers led 6-4 at halftime, but were outscored 7-3 in the second half.

Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with five goals, going over 100 for her career. She finishes the season with 54 goals, which is sixth-most in a season at RIT. Her 103 career goals are tied for sixth all time, and her 123 career points are eighth all time. Senior Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored two goals and finishes her career at RIT with 78 career goals and 98 points. Cori VanKerkhove (East Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge) had a ground ball in her last collegiate game, and Aylannah Dylag (Canton, CT/Canton) got the start on defense. Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) and Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) each scored, while Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) dished out an assist. Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) took the loss in net, making 17 saves.

Vassar out-shot RIT, 33-17. The Tigers grabbed 19 ground balls to 23 for the Brewers. The Tigers won nine draw controls, to 15 for the Herons, and went 12-of-18 on clearing attempts while going 0-for-2 on free position attempts.

Isabelle Goldstein led Vassar with six points on two goals and four assists. Dara Davis added four points on three goals and an assist, while Phoebe Tzannes scored two goals. Kate Pula picked up the win in net for the Brewers making six saves.

RIT got off to a hot start, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead on goals from DaCosta, Caruso, Mandell and Sarkis. DaCosta gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 23:49 on her sixth goal of the season off a feed from Bingo. Caruso made it 2-0 Tigers at 23:22 on her first goal of the afternoon. Mandell increased the Tigers lead to 3-0 at 21:36 with her 20th goal of the season. Finally, Sarkis gave RIT a 4-0 lead at 18:13 on an unassisted goal.

Davis snapped the RIT run with a goal at 14:12, her 41st of the season, and Gooldstein scored off a feed from Tzannes at 13:23, cutting RIT's lead to 4-2.

Sarkis and Caruso struck back-to-back for RIT at 11:26 and 7:45, respectively, to give the Tigers a four-goal cushion at 6-2. The Brewers ended the half with two straight goals. Malena Harang made it 6-3 with her goal off an assist from Rosetti at 5:10 and Rosetti scored off an assist from Davis at 3:34 making it 6-4 at the half.

Goldstein made it 6-5 Tigers with her goal to open the second-half scoring at 26:05 off a feed from Zoe Ripecky. Sarkis made it 7-5 Tigers with her 52nd goal of the season at 24:08.

The Brewers took control of the game with a four goal run over a 6:29 span of the second half. Davis cut the RIT lead to 7-6 on her 42nd goal of the season. Back-to-back goals from Julia Trudell at 19:10 and 18:27 gave the Brewers its first lead of the game at 8-7. Tzannes scored off a pass from Goldstein at 14:54, giving the Brewers a 9-7 lead.

Sarkis gave RIT hope with her fourth goal of the game at 13:21, pulling the Tigers to within a goal at 9-8, but goals from Davis and Tzannes pushed the Vassar lead to three goals at 11-8. Sarkis scored with 4:21 to play, her fifth of the game, making it an 11-9 final score.
