Big run dooms women's lacrosse in 16-10 loss at Muhlenberg



ALLENTOWN, PA – Host Muhlenberg College (4-1) scored nine straight goals over a span of 30:59 covering both halves to hand the RIT women's lacrosse team (1-2) its second consecutive defeat, 16-10 on a cool, breezy, Saturday afternoon.
 
RIT took a 7-5 lead with 14:03 left in the first half on a goal by Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang). The Tigers would not score over the next 30:59 however, as Muhlenberg came roaring back with five consecutive goals to take a 10-7 halftime lead and four more over the first 16:56 of the second half to make it 14-7, before Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored consecutive goals for the Tigers.
 
RIT opened the scoring just 2:14 into the contest on a goal by Kirsten Francis (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley). From there, the two teams would trade the next eight goals before Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) gave the Tigers a 6-4 edge with 16:55 left in the opening half.
 
Stephanie Umbach led the Mules with eight goals and an assist to go along with six draw controls and six caused turnovers. She scored five of her eight goals over the decisive 9-0 run. Casey Armstrong added three goals and four assists, while Michelle Certomiso added a goal and six assists. Kayleigh Thies scored twice, while Kelsey Nagle and Ally Shaffer also scored for Muhlenberg. In net, Kiersten Mulvey shook off a slow start to make five saves and earn the win.
 
Sarkis led RIT with four goals to go along with six draw controls. DaCosta scored a pair of goals, while Bingo tallied a goal and an assist to go along with six draw controls. Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Corinna Mandell, and Francis also scored for the Tigers.
 
Francis, Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic), and goalkeeper Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) caused two turnovers apiece. Conway made seven saves and led the team with seven ground balls in the loss. Eva D'Ignazio (Swarthmore, PA/The Agnes Irwin School) added four ground balls for the Tigers.
 
Muhlenberg out-shot RIT, 30-18 and had 21 ground balls to RIT's 16.
 
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 19, with a non-conference road contest at Nazareth that gets underway at 4 p.m.
