ROCHESTER, NY -- Sophomore
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) drained a shot at the buzzer, giving the RIT men's basketball team a 71-69 win over Brock University in exhibition action from Clark Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon. Stortini gathered in a loose ball off a missed shot from
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and drained his 10-footer as the buzzer sounded giving the Tigers the win.
RIT shot 42.3 percent from the floor on 22-of-52 shooting. The Tigers were 7-of-19 from behind the arc and made 20-of-33 from the foul line.
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led RIT with 18 points, while
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Stortini scored 11 off the bench, while Horde finished with 10 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and two steals.
Brock shot 33.9 percent from the floor on 21-of-62 shooting. The Badgers went 6-of-23 from 3-point land, and were 21-of-27 from the foul line. Johneil Simpson led the Badgers with 18 points, while Zachary Angelini added 15 points. Matt Marshall tallied 10 points and led the Badgers with 12 rebounds.
RIT 32-31 at the half, but fell behind in the second, trailing by as many as 10 points with 6:29 to play when Simpson drained a pair of free throws giving the Badgers a 63-53 lead. The Tigers rallied, outscoring Brock 18-6 over the final 6:29. Herman keyed the run with two straight 3-pointers off feeds from Horde. The first came with 3:38 to play, cutting the lead to 65-62. After an Angelini layup, Herman came down on RIT's next possession, spotted up and hit nothing but net off a feed from Horde, cutting the Badgers lead to 67-65.
Herman tied the score at 69-69 with a pair of free throws with 48 seconds to play in regulation. He scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half. After a Brock timeout, the Badgers got a good look when Simpson got the ball at the top of the key. His jumper clanked off the front iron and into the hands of Horde with 19 seconds to play. That set up the winning bucket for Stortini.
The Tigers open Liberty League regular season action on Friday, Jan. 2 when RIT faces Skidmore College at 8 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. RIT is 5-3 in 2014-15.
