Wrestling drops opening dual match of 2014-15 season at No. 14 Ithaca

ITHACA, NY - The RIT wrestling team (0-1) dropped its opening dual meet of the 2014-15 season to No. 14 Ithaca by a score of 37-7 on Wednesday evening. Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) and Tory Cain (Ontario, NY/Wayne) recorded wins for the Tigers.

Ithaca captured the 125- and 133-pound weight classes by forfeit. In the first contested bout of the dual, Sepor scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period and won 4-3 by decision over Adam Moser. Sepor now has a team-high 11 wins this season for RIT.

In the featured match of the night between two nationally-ranked wrestlers, Ithaca's Dan Pak scored an early first-period takedown to take a lead against RIT's third-ranked Brad Mayville (Marion, NY/Wayne) and then rode out Mayville for the remainder of the period and built 2:39 of riding time advantage.

Pak deferred for the second period and Mayville chose down, which allowed Pak to build the riding-time lead to more than four minutes. Pak scored three near-fall points and then Mayville escaped, which sent Pak to the third period with a 5-1 lead. The wrestlers started neutral for the final two minutes, and Pak scored a late takedown plus the riding time for an 8-1 decision win. Mayville is now 10-4 this season.

RIT got back on the board at 174 with a major decision victory by a 13-0 score from Cain over Franky Nassivera. Cain, the reigning Empire Conference Wrestler of the Week, is now 8-2 this season. He won his weight class at the RIT Invitational this past Saturday, going 4-0.

RIT wraps up the first semester and 2014 calendar year with a tri-meet against SUNY Cortland and Niagara Community College, starting at 12 p.m. from Clark Gym on Saturday afternoon.
