Box Score ROCHESTER, NY – RIT men's basketball team (3-0) defeated SUNY Maritime (1-3) 59-53 in its first game of the 30th Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Clark Gym. Four players scored in double figures for the Tigers, while J.P. Reagan registered a double-double.
Casey Bobelis (Bradenton, FL/Braden River) and Reagan both led RIT with 14 points. Reagan also recorded 10 rebounds and four assists, while Bobelis grabbed six rebounds. A.J. Horde added 13 points with two assists and one steal.
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored 10 while adding four steals.
The Tigers shot 37.3 percent from the floor on 22-of-59 shooting. RIT was 6-of-18 from behind the arc and made 9-of-15 free throws. RIT had a 44-43 advantage in rebounds.
SUNY Maritime shot 33.9 percent from the floor on 21-of-62 shooting, while shooting 1-of-16 from behind the arc. Isaiah Hayes led the Privateers with 11 points, eight rebounds, and one steal. Patrick MacDonald and T'Vaughn Gibson added 10 points apiece, while MacDonald grabbed eight rebounds.
RIT led 25-20 at halftime after Maritime jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game. The Tigers took a 12-11 lead at the 12:52 mark and would not relinquish the advantage for the rest of the game.
Bobelis led RIT off the bench with eight first half points and four rebounds. Horde chipped in seven points, while
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee),
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), and J.P. Reagan each had three points. Reagan added three steals, the first leading to Stortini's 3-pointer to put the Tigers on the board 2:58 into the game.
Sean Corley led Maritime with six points in the opening half. Isaiah Hayes added five points, while Patrick MacDonald recorded four.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 7-0 run to advance the lead to 32-20. With 5:29 left in the game, Maritime was able to tie the game at 47 off of two free throws by Hayes. Bobelis put in a shot from the inside on an assist by Reagan to get back RIT's lead. Reagan grabbed a defensive rebound and dished Herman the ball on the wing for a 3-pointer that gave the Tigers a five-point lead and secure the win.
Reagan scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-5 from the field, while Herman added seven-second half points.
RIT leads the all-time series against Maritime 2-0. The Tigers rolled to a 95-54 win last season on the campus of SUNY Maritime. Privateers' head coach Jake Scott spent three seasons coaching at RIT under
Bob McVean from 2009-2012.
RIT will be back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. to face the D'Youville Spartans in Clark Gym.
