ERIE, PA -- The RIT (1-1) women's basketball team fell by a score of 71-69 in overtime to Washington & Jefferson (2-0) Sunday afternoon in the title game of the Penn State-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and
Merissa Maiorano (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Mendon) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
RIT shot 39.4 percent from the floor for the game on 28-of-71 shooting. The Tigers made 4-of-15 3-pointers and were 9-of-18 from the foul line. Maiorano led RIT with 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She also had 10 rebounds and four assists. Palmitesso added 15 points, while
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton),
Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The John Carroll School) and Olsen each chipped in eight points. Wolcott grabbed 12 rebounds, while Edwards dished out six assists.
RIT fell behind 23-12 early in the first half, but rallied with nine straight points, capped off by a 3-pointer from Edwards at the 9:18 mark, cutting Washington & Jefferson's lead to 23-21. The Tigers would get no closer, trailing 35-27 at halftime. Olsen came off the bench to lead RIT with eight first-half points.
The Presidents built their lead to 10 points early in the second half on a jumper by Valerie Dunlap. RIT rallied with a 14-4 run over a 7:30 minute span, tying the score at 61-61 on a pair of free throws by Palmitesso. Over the final 11:20 of regulation, neither team held more than a two point lead, with 10 lead changes and five ties in that span.
Late in regulation, Maiorano tallied two straight buckets for RIT, giving the Tigers a slim 61-57 edge with 1:51 to play. But the Presidents rallied, out scoring RIT 4-1 over the fnal 1:51, tying the score on a layup by Danni Medovich with 13 seconds to play.
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) had a shot at the buzzer miss, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Maiorano gave RIT an early lead on her bucket off an assist from Wolcott 1:30 into the extra session. After a pair of W&J free throws tied the score, Taylor Cortozza gave the Presidents a 66-64 lead on her layup with 2:08 to play.
After Wolcott tied the game at 66-66 on a pair of free throws, Medovich gave Washington & Jefferson a 69-66 lead on her 3-pointer.
Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The John Carroll School) made 1-of-2 free throws with 25 seconds to play making the score 69-67.
Alexa Delgreco turned the ball over on the Presidents next possession, giving the Tigers a chance with 24 seconds to play. After the timeout, Glaz nailed a jumper off an assist from Maiorano, tying the score at 69-69 with 17 seconds left. But, on W&J's next possession, Beka Bellhy drained a jumper with six seconds left that sealed the win for the Presidents.
Washington & Jefferson held a slight 48-47 rebounding edge. RIT scored 32 of its 69 points in the paint and scored nine points off of 14 offensive rebounds. The Tigers capitalized with eight points off of 10 Washington & Jefferson turnovers.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 when the Tigers host Hamilton College at 5:30 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
