Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Women's hockey has unbeaten streak snapped in loss to Lindenwood

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (5-3-2, 0-1-1 CHA) fell to visiting Lindenwood (2-5-1, 1-0-1 CHA) by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon from the Gene Polisseni Center. RIT's four-game unbeaten streak was snapped in the loss.

Tied 1-1 in the third period, Lindenwood scored twice to win for the first time in Rochester. Brittania Gillanders scored a power-play goal with 10:55 left in regulation and Carrie Atkinson added an empty-netter with 59 seconds left to seal the win. In goal, Nicole Hensley turned aside 39 of 40 shots faced to earn the game's first star for the second straight day. Shara Jasper added a goal and an assist and was named the game's second star.

RIT had its run of allowing two or less goals in 18 straight games dating back to last February snapped in today's loss.

Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) scored RIT's lone goal. In net, Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) made 26 saves in the loss.

RIT out-shot Lindenwood, 40-29. The Tigers were 0-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Lindenwood was 1-for-5.

"I thought the whole weekend we were floating around, waiting for pucks to come to us instead of being aggressive," said RIT head coach Scott McDonald. "Our effort was subpar and it showed on the scoreboard."

Neither team scored in the opening period, as RIT held a 10-7 shot on goal advantage. RIT attempted 26 shots to just nine for Lindenwood, but the Lady Lions defense did a good job keeping RIT to the outside for the most part.

RIT's best chance of the period came in the final five minutes, when Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby Collegiate) blew past a Lindenwood defender on the rush and from just inside the right faceoff circle, whistled a shot past Hensley, but off the crossbar and out.

Jasper had two quality chances for the Lady Lions, but Binnington was able to handle both shots.

Both teams scored a goal in the middle stanza, while both Binnington and Hensley made some huge saves to keep it a low scoring contest.

Early in the period, Binnington came up with three great saves, as Lindenwood came out attacking.

Grigg scored her team-best tying fourth goal of the season at the 10:55 mark, jamming home a rebound in front off a shot from Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) to make it 1-0 Tigers. Haley Northcote (Cumberland, Ontario/Minnesota State) got the puck down low to McCrea, who tried to stuff it past Hensley. The puck looked to be covered, but Grigg took a whack at it and got it over the goal line.

With 1:49 left in the second, Jasper tallied her fifth goal of the season, putting home her own rebound in close after the initial shot was stopped by Binnington. Giallanders made a great tip of a point shot by Jasper and stuffed in her own rebound on the power-play to give the Lady Lions the lead.

RIT is 4-2-4 all-time against the Lady Lions and 3-1-2 against them all-time on home ice. Last night, RIT and Lindenwood skated to a 1-1 tie. Paton scored RIT's lone goal, while Binnington made 26 saves. RIT had two goals disallowed, including one with 14.5 seconds remaining in regulation. The two teams will also meet during the 2014-15 season on Jan. 30-31 at Lindenwood.

The Tigers return to action next weekend with a pair of matches at Ivy League foe Princeton University. Both Friday and Saturday's contests start at 3 p.m.
