Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Karen Shaddock- Assistant Sports Information Director

Men's hockey drops second straight contest to undefeated Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA – The RIT men's hockey team (2-5-0, 1-3-0 AHA) fell for the second straight night by a score of 4-2 to Robert Morris University (7-0-1, 5-0-1 AHA) on Saturday night at 84 Lumber Arena, part of the Robert Morris University Sports Center.

Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters) and Danny Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders) scored goals for the Tigers. Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) and Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings) assisted on McMullen's goal, while Brandon Thompson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Handsworth) made tallied an assist on Smith's goal. In net, Jordan Ruby (Tavistock, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) made 38 saves on 42 shots.

The Colonials were led by Zac Lynch with two goals, while Timmy Moore and Brady Ferguson netted one each. Dalton Isyk was in goal for Robert Morris making 31 saves on 33 shots.

RIT was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage, while 5-for-5 on the penalty-kill. Robert Morris outshot RIT 42-33.

"We had a lot of penalties in the second period and gave up a lot of shots," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "We had poor puck management and gave up goals they (Robert Morris) didn't have to work for. We didn't block shots well and gave them a lot of chances."

The Tigers finished the first period tied 1-1, just like the previous night. Ruby made 11 saves on 12 shots. Lynch scored first for Robert Morris to take the lead seven minutes into the game. McMullen knotted the game for RIT minutes later on an odd-man rush. Mitchell and Garbowsky assisted on the goal.

The Colonials came out firing in the second outshooting the Tigers 25-2. RIT's defense played strong on the penalty-kill, with four straight succesful penalty kills. Robert Morris had a potential goal called back with the goalpost off the mooring with the puck crossing the goal line.

Ferguson gave Robert Morris the lead, firing a shot over Ruby's left side placing the puck over his opposite shoulder with four minutes left in the second.

Lynch scored his second goal of the game and the third for Robert Morris off a wide-open pass to the middle four minutes into the third period.

The Tigers had a few chances in the third. Mitchell had a big shot right in front with 12 minutes left as the Colonials finished their power play that went over the net. At the ten-minute mark, Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) took a wide-open slap shot from the left side that was saved by Izyk.

The Tigers cut Robert Morris' lead to 4-2 on a goal from Smith with just under two minutes left in the game. Thompson assisted on Smith's first tally of the year.

"These tough early season games are good for us," said Wilson. "We will be pretty good as we mature throughout the season, as there is already a difference. As soon as we get healthy, we will have more depth and get much stronger."

The two teams will meet again back at RIT's Gene Polisseni Center this season on Feb. 20-21, 2015.

The Tigers will be back in action at home for a weekend series against AHA foe Holy Cross on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8 at 7:05 p.m.
