FREDONIA, NY - The RIT volleyball team (13-8) rolled to a three-set win over the University of Pitt.-Bradford and took down host SUNY Fredonia in four sets on day two of the Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) and
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
In the opener, RIT won by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-23. Szybist hit .296 with 14 kills to go along with 11 digs and a pair of aces.
Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) dished out 21 assists to go along with 10 digs, while
Laiz Novaes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Centro Educational) had a team-high 17 digs to go along with five kills and three service aces. Senior
Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) added six blocks, including four solo swats. Davis contributed 12 digs.
"I' was pleased with our effort," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "We served well and had stretches of good, solid defense. This was due to that serving and our block."
Against Fredonia, RIT took the first two sets, 25-21 and 26-24. Fredonia won the third set, 25-22, while RIT put the match away with a 25-21 win in set four.
Szybist was a monster offensively, tying a season-high with 27 kills to go along with 15 digs, while hitting .286. Davis played strong defensively with 26 digs, while Dowdy dished out a career-best 46 assists to go along with 12 digs.
Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield) had a team-best two aces to go along with seven digs. Novaes had 13 digs, while
Amy Van Hienen (Castor, Alberta/Gus Wetter) added 11. Wheeler added six kills and four blocks.
"I'm really proud of the team effort versus a very good Fredonia team," said Lodes. "We pushed through some intense stretches and also made some good tactical adjustments. Also, the contributions from many players today, including versus Pitt-Bradford, allowed us to win this tough match."
Last night, the Tigers split a pair of matches, disptaching Hilbert in three sets, while falling to Buffalo State in three sets.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, with a home contest vs. SUNY Brockport that gets underway at 6 p.m.
