Women's hockey lets third period lead slip away in loss at Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT - The RIT women's hockey team (2-2-1) let a third period lead slip away in a 2-1 loss to Vermont (3-1-1) at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) scored RIT's lone goal 3:27 into the game off a feed from Haley Northcote (Cumberland, Ontario/Minnesota State) to give RIT a 1-0 lead. The game remained scoreless until Vermont's Dayna Colang tied the game on a power-play 8:16 into the third period. Just 3:24 later, Vermont would take the lead for good, as Victoria Andreakos slid a shot past RIT goaltender Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) for the game-winner. Amanda Drobot and Amanda Pelkey assisted on both Vermont goals.

RIT goaltender Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) dropped her second straight contest after rattling off nine straight wins, stopping 27 shots. Vermont's Madison Litchfield made 20 saves in the win.

Vermont out-shot RIT, 29-21, including 24-12 over the final two periods. The Catamounts were 1-for-4 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 0-for-4.

"I thought we played well for the majority of the game," said RIT head coach Scott McDonald. "Unfortunately, we came apart at the end and failed to close out a very talented Vermont team. It's still early in the season, but we have to learn to play the full 60 minutes."

The Tigers are now 7-2-3 all-time against Vermont.

The two teams meet once again on Sunday at Gutterson Fieldhouse with the puck drop at 2 p.m.
