ONEONTA, NY -- The No. 23 RIT women's soccer team (3-1-0) defeated Hartwick College (0-1-2) by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, NY.
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) and
Kiana Richards (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) each scored for the Tigers. May,
Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and
Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) were All-Tournament Team selections for RIT who went 1-1 on the weekend.
Shots were 14-4 in favor of the Tigers, while each team took seven corner kicks.
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) picked up her third shutout win of the season, making two saves. Murray and the Tigers defense have conceded just one goal in the first four games of the season.
May gave RIT a 1-0 lead on her first goal of the season in the ninth minute. She headed in a goal off a cross from
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) who sent a nice service into the box from the flank. May assisted on Vakiener's overtime goal versus Otterbein back on Aug. 31.
Richards tacked on an insurance goal in the 77th minute to salt away the win for the Tigers. Her shot from 25 yards out caught Hartwick goalie Hope Brown off her line, floating over her head and into the goal for a 2-0 RIT lead.
The Tigers defense locked down the Hawks attack the whole game, allowing just two shots to reach Murray.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, May 11 when the Tigers make the quick trip to face St. John Fisher College under the lights at Growney Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.
