Vakiener's record nine goals, including game winner in double OT, gives women's lacrosse win at Rochester



ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior midfielder #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# scored a RIT (8-4, 3-2 Liberty League) program record nine goals, including the game-winner with 33 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Tigers a 14-13 victory over the University of Rochester (2-8, 1-4 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Vakiener broke the previous school record for goals in game, held by Kelly Martin (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta H.S.) who scored eight versus Cazenovia on April 26, 2004. Vakiener now has a school record 230 goals, and 327 career points and hit the 50-goal mark for the third straight season.

Freshman #Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored three goals and registered one assist. (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East)# had one goal and three assists, while #Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) also scored. Senior (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# made 13 saves in net for RIT in 66 minutes of action.

Cassie Mahar led Rochester with a career-high five goals. Stephanie Ortell scored three times, and Marissa Traina took the loss, making nine saves in net for Rochester.

After a lengthy delay in the first half due to lightening, Sarkis scored twice for the Tigers in the last six minutes of the first half, set up by Mandell each time, to give RIT a 6-3 lead at the break. 

Vakiener tallied her fourth goal of the game, and Sarkis set up Mandell as RIT built their to 8-4 for three minutes into the second half.

Rochester regrouped as Mahar scored twice in three minutes and Ortell netted her second goal of the game to pull the Yellowjackets to within 8-7 with 20:42 remaining in regulation.

Vakiener's fifth goal made it 9-7 RIT, before Randall answered for the Yellowjackets from the free position. Maizel added a free position shot 2:30 later as Rochester evened it at 9-9. Mahar put the Yellowjackets ahead for the first time since the opening minute of play when she scored with 13:35 left to make it 10-9 Rochester.

Sarkis answered back for RIT, rifling home the equalizer with 10:38 left off a feed from Caruso.

With just over four minutes left, the Tigers took possession and patiently ran time off the clock looking for the game-winning shot. As Sarkis cut in towards goal in the closing seconds, the ball was dislodged from her and Rochester took possession as the horn sounded for OT.

In the first OT period, Mahar put Rochester ahead 11-10, but Vakiener answered right back, tying the score at 11-11.

Watson put Rochester up, 12-11, with five seconds left in the first OT, but Vakiener scored twice for RIT in :28 seconds of the second overtime, putting the Tigers back in front 13-12.

Skinner forced a tie at 13-13 when she scored with 1:41 left in the second overtime. RIT was awarded a free position shot in the final minute and Vakiener buried it for the clincher. The Tigers won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock for the win.

#Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)# won three draw controls for RIT who won 13 on the game, including the crucial one at the end. #Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy)#, #Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields)#, Marless Vlassis, and Vakiener each won two draws each. Vakiener caused three turnovers. She collected three ground balls along with Crane and #Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili)#.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 19 at Rensselaer. First draw is at 4 p.m. in Troy, New York.
