HAMDEN, CT – A disheartening six goal second period for No. 8 Quinnipiac (11-2-5) left the RIT women's hockey team (8-7-1) in an insurmountable hole, as the Tigers fell 8-0 in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic on Friday evening at the TD Bank Center.
Despite generating consistent offensive pressure from start to finish, and only being outshot 29-25, the Tigers just couldn't find the back of the net. #
Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# led the offensive attack, taking a team high five shots but couldn't punch any of them in.
Freshman goaltender Brook Sotddart made the second start of her collegiate career but couldn't get into rhythm, allowing three goals on 14 shots faced. After falling behind 3-0, RIT Head Coach #
Scott McDonald would switch to sophomore (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate)Jetta Rackliff# in goal. She would remain in net the rest of the game, allowing five goals to the Bobcats on 15 shots.
For Quinnipiac, Shiann Darkangelo had herself a solid five point day, with a hat trick and two assists. Kelly Babstock would add a goal of her own as well as three assists for four total points on the day. Morgan Fritz-Ward scored two goals while Megan Turner and Kristen Tamberg each had one, in the 8-0 route.
Sydney Rossman had an outstanding showing for Quinnipiac, making 25 saves to shut down the RIT offensive attack.
Both teams played a hard fought first period in which the Tigers and Bobcats each had several offensive scoring chances. About halfway through the period it looked as though Quinnipiac would score the first goal of a game, only to have the goal waved off after review. The period remained scoreless until 4:25 remained in the period when Darkangelo would find the back of the net to put the Bobcats out in front 1-0, a lead they would take into the first break.
The second period was a very different story as Quinnipiac took control right out of the gate scoring just 51 second in. That goal seemed to open the flood gates, as Babstock would score just 2:29 seconds late to make it 3-0. at the 5:13 mark, Darkangelo would add her second goal of the game. The Bobcats would add three more goals through the remainder of the period to take a 7-0 lead over the Tigers into the second break.
Entering the third period, RIT would need an improbable comeback to have a chance against Quinnipiac but was once again shut out by Rossman in goal. The Bobcats would add one more late goal, courtesy of Darkangelo, giving her a hat trick on the day and the 8-0 final score.
The loss marks the first of the season for the Tigers on a Friday, as well as its first two-game losing streak. The last time RIT lost two straight was last season on Feb. 22-23 in back to back games against Mercyhurst.
The Tigers are now 0-1 all-time against Quinnipiac and will move on go play in the consolation game of the Nutmeg Classic, tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 30 against Connecticut at 1 p.m. Yale defeated Connecticut, 5-4 in the other semifinal contest.
