No. 24 RIT women's soccer falls to No. 3 William Smith 2-0 on senior day

ROCHESTER, NY -- On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium, the No. 24 RIT women's soccer team (11-3-3, 5-2-1 Liberty League) was shut out by No. 3 William Smith (15-1-0, 8-0-0 Liberty League) 2-0. Prior to the game, the senior class of #Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel)#, #Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel)#, and #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# were honored by their teammates.

Shots were 21-3 in favor of the Herons, who have not allowed a goal since Sept. 28. William Smith took six corner kicks to one for the Tigers who lose for the first time in four games.

Senior Chelsea Dunay got the win in net for William Smith making three saves. #Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls)# took the loss for RIT, making 10 saves.

William Smith had the first good scoring chance in the seventh minute when Leah Connerty's header went just wide of the RIT post.

RIT had a couple good scoring chances from #Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) and Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark)#. Kiss had a chance to run a ball down from #Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville)# out in space, but the Herons defender got in front of her enough to quash the chance.

Ornellas had a good chance, when #Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac)# fed a ball to Ornellas making the run. But Dunay came off her line and deflected the ball out of harms way beofre Ornellas could get a shot off.

#Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna)# had another chance late in the first half when she broke away from William Smith defense. But the Herons defense recoverd and got back before she could get a shot off.

With 1:27 to play in the first half, William Smith had a great chance to take a lead when Krista Longo fired a shot off a scramble in front of the RIT goal. Luckily, #Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland)# was on the line and saved the ball to keep the game scoreless at the half.

The Herons got on the board in the 70th minute when Longo scored off an assist from MacKenzie Smith. Smith fired a shot that Murray saved off the crossbar. But the rebound came to Longo and she buried a shot into the net for her fifth goal of the season and 1-0 William Smith lead.

Evie Manning gave the Herons a 2-0 lead on her goal in the 77th minute. It looked as if Murray had a loose ball all covered up inside the RIT penalty box, but Manning somehow wrestled the ball away from Murray and scored into the open net.

RIT had a couple good shots down the stretch, but the Herons defense made the stops and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.

Kiss had her eight-game goal-scoring streak snapped in the loss.

The Tigers begin Liberty League Tournament play next Wednesday, Nov. 6 when RIT faces Skidmore College in the semifinals in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
