Women's hockey suffers tough loss, squandering third period lead at No. 10 Northeastern



BOSTON, MA -- The RIT women's ice hockey team (1-2-0) fell to No. 10 Northeastern (1-1-0) 5-4 in non-conference action from Matthews Arena in Boston on Saturday afternoon. Paige Savage scored the game winner for the Huskies at 11:58 of the third period off an assist from Hayley Masters.  #Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# had a goal an an assist for RIT, while #Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) and Emilee Bulleid (Waterdown, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres)# each had two assists.

Shots were 37-27 in favor of Northeastern. The Tigers broke through in a big way, going 3-of-5 with the man advantage, and held the Huskies to no goals on five opportunities. RIT did allow two shorthanded goals for the first time at the Division I level.

The three power-play goals tied a Division I team record for the Tigers, also set on Feb. 2, 2013 at Lindenwood.

#Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# took the loss in net, making 32 saves. Chloe Desjardins got the win for Huskies, making 23 saves.

"Overall, I was pleased with how we played this weekend," said RIT Head Coach #Scott McDonald#. "Northeastern is one of the fastest teams in the nation, and we skated right with them. I was also happy to see us rally from 3-1 down in the second period to take the 4-3 lead. The team battled hard all weekend, hopefully we can build off that."

Chelsey Goldberg's shorthanded unassisted goal at 2:49 of the first period was the lone scoring of the frame. She intercepted a pass from a Tiger defenseman, walked in on Binnington and wristed a shot off the goaltender's shoulder and in.

#Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)# opened the second-period scoring with her power play goal at 7:24 off assists from McCrea and Scoyne, tying the score at 1-1.

Chelsea Goll made it 2-1 Northeastern with her goal at 11:01 of the second period off assists from Goldberg and Tori Hickel. Goldberg gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead at 13:43 of the second with the assist going to Claire Santostefano.

#Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# scored the first of three straight goals for the Tigers. Her power play goal at 14:34 of the second period off assists from #Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury) and Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# made it 3-2 Northeastern. McCrea tallied an even strength goal at 18:16 just inder four minutes later off assists from #Lauren Klein (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View)# and Bulleid, tying the score at 3-3. Klein's assist was the first of her collegiate career.

#Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy)# gave RIT it's first lead of the game at 5:16 of the third period with a power play goal on assists from Scoyne and Bulleid.

Kelly Wallace tied the score for Northeastern at 6:41 of the third with an even strength goal with the assists going to Katie MacSorley and Colleen Murphy. Savage scored the eventual game-winner at 11:58, giving the Huskies a 5-4 lead.

Northeastern leads the all-time series between the two schools, 12-0-0. It was the first meeting between the two schools in 18 years.

Last night, RIT picked up its first win of the 2013-14 season, defeating New Hampshire, 3-2.

RIT returns to action on Friday, October 11 when the Tigers host the University of Vermont at 7 p.m. at Ritter Arena as part of RIT's Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.
