BOSTON, MA -- Returning to action for the first time in 2013, the RIT (3-6) women's basketball hit the road facing Wentworth College (7-3) on Thursday afternoon, losing to the Leopards 46-42 in Boston, Mass. #
Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and
Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)# led the Tigers with 11 and 10 points respectively.
RIT trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, before a 14-2 run by the Tigers late in the period gave RIT their first lead of the game. Tennant hit a pair of free throws with 2:30 in the half to play to give RIT a 23-21 lead. The Tigers closed out the half outscoring the Leopards 18-2 over the final 10:51 of the first half to give the Tigers a 27-24 halftime lead.
The Tigers extended their lead to five points in the opening moments of the second half on a jumper by Wheeler, giving RIT a 31-26 lead.
Wentowrth closed out the game with a 6-0 run to pick up their seventh win of the season, as the Tigers went scoreless over the final 5:58 of the contest. The Tigers had a chance to tie the score late in regulation, but RIT never got a shot off, turning the ball over with seven seconds to play.
RIT shot 36 percent from the floor on 17-of-47 shooting. The Tigers were 2-of-8 from three-point land, and went 6-of-10 from the foul line. Tennant finished with 11 points and seven rebound to pace the Tigers, whiel Wheeler added 10 points and grabbed seven caroms. #
Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# added seven points and seven rebounds, five assists and a steal.
The Tigers held a slight 33-31 rebounding edge, scoring 19 points off of 25 Wentworth turnovers. The two teams combined for 52 turnovers.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when the Tigers return to Liberty League play at William Smith. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Birstol Gym on the campus of William Smith College.
