Havens bucket with 13 seconds left gives women's hoops big win at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# converted a layup with 13 seconds to play, which cinched a 55-52 Liberty League road win for the RIT women's basketball team at Union College (7-9, 3-5 Liberty League) on Tuesday night. Havens and sophomore #Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# each scored 17 points for the Tigers who improve to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League.

RIT led by six points late in the second half. A pair of free throws with 1:08 to play by Brittney Kenney capped off a 5-0 run by the Dutchwomen that cut the Tigers lead to one at 53-52.

Both teams exchanged possessions late, but, a turnover by Kenney gave RIT possession with :23 to play. Havens came down, drove the lane and laid in her 17th points of the game to give RIT a three point lead.

Shayla Madden had a three-pointer come off the rim that clinched the win for the Tigers.

Havens and Kramer each finshed with 17 points. The 17 points scored by Kramer was a career high. She scored nine of her 17 points in the second half.

Havens finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.

#Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)# added eight points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

RIT shot 39.2 percent from the floor, but were 12-of-24 (50%) in the second half.

Union held a 41-30 rebounding edge, but scored 15 points off of turnovers, and 11 second chance points.

The win pulls RIT into a tie with Rensselaer for fourth in the Liberty League standings with a 4-4 conference record.

RIT is off until Jan. 31 when the Tigers travel to William Smith the face the Herons at 6 pm.
