ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team dropped their first game of the season with a 1-0 loss to St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints Stephanie Sayward scored the game-winner in the 88th minute to lift St. Lawrence to the win. The loss drops RIT to 5-1-0 on the season while the Saints improve to 5-1-0.
St. Lawrence held a slight edge on shots 8-7. RIT had five shots in the first half and two in the second. St. Lawrence took all eight shots in the second half. Each team took a corner kick and the fouls were seven for RIT and five for the Saints.
RIT's
Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss allowing one goal and making two saves. It was her first loss of the season, the goal allowed broke a 285:53 scoreless streak. Abby van Geldern picked up the win for St. Lawrence making three saves.
The Tigers had a golden scoring chance late in the second half when
Shireen Irani (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports Academy) sent a service across the goal that was just out of the reach of the head of
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport).
St. Lawrence was able to squeeze a goal through in the waining moments when Seyward grabbed a loose ball inside the RIT penalty area and tapped it past Valenti.
RIT returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Clarkson Univeristy in non-conference action. Kick-off at RIT Field is at 12 pm.
