GENEVA, NY -- Seventh-seed
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) of the RIT women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament at the ITA Championships hosted by William Smith College on Friday and Saturday. Berg fell to Danika Robinson of Skidmore in a quarterfinal match on Saturday.
Berg opened play on Friday by defeating Alexandra Vizgatis from Nazareth College 6-0, 6-0 in her first round match. She then upended Agata Kubik of Ithaca, 6-3, 6-0 in her second round match. Berg dispatched Joanie Hilton of William Smith in the third round, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday morning before falling to Robinson in the quarters. Berg is now 8-2 this season at singles.
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) was defeated in her first round match, losing to Liz Stachtiaris from New York University, 6-4, 6-0. She defeated Delaney Scollan of Skidmore 8-6 in a consolation match, but was eliminated in the second round of the consolation matches, losing to Elizabeth Geer of St. Lawrence.
The duo of Berg and Stanley won their first doubles match, 8-3 over Shari Damon and Jess McCue of William Smith, 8-3. They dropped their second match, 8-5 to Lia Weiner and Frances Tseng of Rochester.
Michele Caporali (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) won her first singles match, defeating Veronica Efimenko of Hunter, 6-1, 6-2, but was defeated by Deborah Barany of Hamilton, 6-1, 6-1 in her second-round match.
RIT returns to dual match action on Wednesday, September 30 when the Tigers face SUNY Geneseo at 3:30 pm in Geneseo, New York.
