UTICA, NY - Sophomore forward
#Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge)# (Batavia, NY) scored a shorthanded goal with 26 seconds left in regulation, breaking a 2-2 tie and lifting the #5 RIT women's hockey team (14-2-2, 10-2-1 ECAC West) to a 3-2 victory over Utica (9-7-2, 5-6-1 ECAC West) at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
Stack took a feed from
#Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)# (St. George, Ontario), sped into the Utica zone and beat Kelly Peers for her ninth goal of the season. The shorthanded goal was RIT's ninth of the season, most in Division III.
Utica tied the game at 2 with 3:42 left in regulation, as Andrea Maxon scored her eighth goal of the season.
RIT scored twice in the first 3:29 of the game to take a quick 2-0 lead.
#Missy Hall (Chesterland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# (Chesterland, OH) opened the scoring just 2:05 into the game on assists from
#Kelley Prom (Grafton, WI/Wisconsin Wild)# (Grafton, WI) and
#Shireen Irani (Calgary, Alberta/PSA Chaos)# (Calgary, Alberta).
Just 1:24 later, Dagg scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season. She took a feed from
#Keltie Jones (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)# (Burlington, Ontario) and ripped a shot past Peers. Stack also assisted on the goal.
Utica cut the RIT lead in half at the 8:29 mark of the period, as Krystal Cummings scored.
RIT out-shot Utica 49-26. The Tigers were 0-for-8 with the man-advantage, while Utica was 0-for-6. Peers was excellent in net for Utica, stopping 46 shots.
#Sandra Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers)# (Abbotsford, British Columbia) made 24 saves to improve to 10-2-2 for RIT in 2008-09.
Dagg and Stack each scored a goal and added an assist for the Tigers.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two teams, 6-2-0.
The two teams complete the weekend series on Sunday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, starting at 3 p.m.
