ELMIRA, NY -- The RIT (3-16, 0-10 E8) women's basketball team was defeated by Elmira College (8-9, 3-5 E8) 64-50 in Empire 8 action on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was tight throughout, with eight ties and six lead changes. RIT took a 29-27 lead into halftime on a three-pointer by #
Rachel Bruno (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah)# (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) with 20 seconds remaining in the half.
Bruno paced the Tigers in the first half with nine points.
#Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# (Liverpool, NY) scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and
#Charley Scott-McGrail (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame)# (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) chipped in six points off the bench.
The Tigers shot 42.3% from the floor in the first half on 11-of-26 shooting. Three of RIT's 11 field goals came from behind the arc.
Elmira opened the second half outscoring RIT 18-5 in the first five minutes. The Soaring Eagles' Becca Fretz converted an old fashioned three-point play giving Elmira a 45-34 lead.
RIT went cold from the floor making just nine field goals in the second half and were never able to recover from Elmira's early second half run, losing by 14.
Dennis led RIT with 14 points and eight rebounds. She became the all-time single-season leader in blocks. Dennis now has 58 blocks, breaking the record set by
Margot Sandy (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) in 2006-07.
