Valiant Comeback for Women's Basketball Falls Short Against SUNY Geneseo

Danielle Furman poured in a career-high 23 points for RIT on Thursday

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT women's basketball team (3-10) rallied from 10 points down late in the second half to tie the game at 54 with 1:53 left, but could not complete the comeback, falling to SUNY Geneseo (3-10), 64-56 in second reound action of the 2009 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament at Clark Gym on Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers trailed 50-40 with 7:04 in regulation, before embarking on a 14-4 run over the next 5:11 to tie the game at 54 on a 3-pointer by #Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport).  Katelyn Charbooneau hit a big 3-pointer for SUNY Geneseo on the next possession, followed by a pair of made free throws by #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) to make the score 57-56 Knights.  Unfortunately for RIT, Tracy Wangelin scored the next five points for SUNY Geneseo and RIT could not answer.

Furman scored a career-high in points for the second time in three games, finishing with 23, with five made 3-pointers and four steals.  She now has 58 points over her last three games (19.3 per game).

Dennis continued her dominant post play, scoring 17 points to go along with 11 boards and a career-best eight blocks.  She was 9-for-12 from the foul line, making her final nine attempts of the game.  Seven of her eight blocks came in the first half.  Dennis now has nine double-doubles this season.

#Audrey Mincey (Neptune, NJ/Neptune)# (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) and #Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Blasdell)# (Blasdell, NY/Blasdell) added six points each for RIT.  Wapshare also pulled down a season-best 10 boards.

RIT shot 24.6 percent (16-for-65) from the field.  The Tigers turned the ball over 15 times, including only five in the second half.  Geneseo shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the field and out-rebounded RIT 49-41.

Wangelin led the Knights with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists.  Charbonneau scored 14 points, while Bri Dunton added nine for the sixth-seeded SUNY Geneseo, who will play fifth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan Raiders on Saturday at 1 p.m.

SUNY Geneseo led 33-25 at halftime.  The Knights led by as many as 12 late in the first half, before the Tigers made a run to cut the deficit.

RIT will conclude play in the Chase Tournament on Saturday morning, as they play eighth-seeded Keuka in the seventh place game at St. John Fisher.  That contest begins at 11 a.m.
