ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's soccer team earned a hard-fought scoreless tie against John Carroll University to wrap up action in Rachel Miller Memorial Classic on a dry, warm and sunny Sunday afternoon at the RIT Turf Field. The Tigers went 0-1-1 on the weekend, finishing in a tie for third. Ohio Northern and John Carroll both went 1-0-1 on the weekend.
The Tigers held a 13-8 edge in shots overall and fired 10 shots on net to just three for John Carroll.
RIT had three glorious chances, all within 1:30, early in the second half, but John Carroll goalkeeper and tournament MVP Michelle Zrebiec stopped all three chances. First, Shireen Irani (Calgary, AB/National Sports Academy) (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports Academy) came streaking down the right side and tried going against the grain, but was robbed by Zrebiec. Next, Erica Main (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) side-stepped a pair of defenders just outside the box and rocketed a shot that was stopped. Finally, Zrebiec thwarted Emily Traversi (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) to end the threat.
Main had RIT's best chance in the first overtime, breaking free just outside the box, chipping a shot over the goalkeeper the sailed just wide.
RIT's defense, led by Sarah Frisicano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), Stephanie Servetas (Dover, NH/Dover) (Dover, NH/Dover) and Danielle LaFrance (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N.Syracuse) (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was stout, limiting the Blue Streaks offense all afternoon.
Both teams used most of their rosters throughout the game, to try and fight the heat on the sweltering turf.
Both teams struggled to find offense in the first half, as most of the play was centered near midfield.
The Tigers out-shot John Carroll 6-3 over the first 45 minutes of play.
In the opening game of the day, Allegheny (0-1-1) and Ohio Northern played to a 1-1 draw. Allegheny took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a goal by Ashley Miller. Chelsea Albert tied the game at with 5:34 left in regulation for Ohio Northern (1-0-1). Ohio Northern out-shot Allegheny 21-9. Emily Karr made 10 saves for Allegheny.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, as they host Hamilton at 3 p.m.
