ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's soccer team (0-1) opened the 2008 regular season by falling to Ohio Northern, 4-2 at the Rachel Miller Memorial Classic on a warm and sunny Saturday morning at the RIT Turf Field.
Jamie Eiben broke a 2-2 tie for Ohio Northern with a goal in the 80th minute sliding a shot inside the right post from inside the box on a partial breakaway. Taylor Garber assisted on the goal.
The Polar Bears put the game away five minutes later, as Katie Kinkelaar scored her second goal of the day, jamming in a loose ball of a corner kick. Kaitlin Sanders assisted on the tally.
Kinkelaar scored two goals and added an assist for Ohio Northern (1-0).
The Tigers made a spirited rally, coming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the game at 2.
RIT got on the board in the 61st minute, as Erica Main (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) took a perfect feed from Emily Traversi (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) down the left side, deked a defender and ripped a shot inside the left post from 12-yards out.
Main nearly tied the game a minute later, as she took a pass from Shireen Irani (Calgary, AB/National Sports Academy) (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports Academy) and fired a shot that was thwarted by a diving stop by Lauren Roberts.
Freshman Kim Sisti (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute, getting a perfect tip pass from Allyson Pisher (Holley, NY/Holley) (Holley, NY/Holley) inside the box and sliding a shot into the open side. Krystal Adriaansen (Marion, NY/Marion) (Marion, NY/Marion) also assisted on the goal, as she fed a free kick to the net.
Ohio Northern out-shot RIT 20-10. Both teams had four corner kicks.
Ohio Northern applied pressure on RIT for most of the first half and got on the board in the 31st minute, as Kinkelaar picked up a loose ball in front of the RIT net after shoving Tiger goalkeeper Ashley Conti (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (Canfield, OH/Canfield) out of the way and scored into the open net.
The Polar Bears upped their lead to 2-0 just 11 minutes later, as Kinkelaar slid a perfect crossing pass to Natalie White, who was all alone at the right side of the Tiger net. White buried the shot for her first tally of the year.
Ohio Northern held a 10-4 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second Miller Classic contest on Saturday, Caitlyn Walton (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored in the 80th minute to lift John Carroll to a 1-0 win over Allegheny.
The Rachel Miller Memorial Classic concludes on Sunday, as Allegheny plays Ohio Northern at 11 a.m. and the Tigers host John Carroll at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played on the RIT Turf Field.
