ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT softball team (9-11, 4-2 Empire 8) swept a doubleheader against Buffalo State College on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at the RIT Field. The Tigers extended their winning streak to five games after defeating Buffalo State (12-6) 3-2 in game one. The Bengals rebounded to snap RIT's winning streak by taking the second game, 14-4 in five innings.
In game one, RIT scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit amd build a 3-1 lead.
Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) drove in
Katie Grenga (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) with a single to tie the game at 1.
Breana Sniezek (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) gave RIT the lead when scored on a wild pitch.
Stephanie Nailos (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) put RIT up 3-1, singling in McPherson, who advanced to third on the wild pitch.
Freshman hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) (Alden, NY/Alden) picked up the win, allowing just five hits and striking out seven in the complete game effort. She improved to 7-5 on the year.
Junior
Jenna Mausolf (Hudson, NY/Hudson) (Hudson, NY/Hudson) was 2-for-3 in game one for RIT.
Nicole Maher led the Bengals by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and driven in. Jenna Frieling pitched a complete game for the Bengals.
In game two, RIT rushed to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as McPherson singled in Sniezek, who led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second by
Amanda Morehouse (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy). Nailos followed McPherson by hitting a towering home run to right center.
The Bengals roared back with two runs in the second and three in the third to go up 5-4. Buffalo State sealed the game with nine runs in the top of the fifth, building a 14-4 cushion.
Nicole Maher led the way offensively for the Bengals by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Jolene Banach was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Christina Tschari was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Morehouse had three sacrifices for RIT. McPherson and Sniezek each had two hits.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Empire 8 foe Ithaca to play the Bombers in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
