Men's Tennis Edges Hobart 5-4; Wins Sixth Straight

ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's tennis team (8-4, 5-3 Empire 8) earned its sixth consecutive victory on Monday, narrowly defeating Hobart College (8-14) by a score of 5-4.

The two teams split the singles matches, but RIT took two of three doubles matches to pick up the win. At third doubles, the duo of Mauricio Pommier (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/German) (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/German) and Joe Schember (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) combined to defeat Jamie Flanigan and Will Tucker by an 8-5 margin. Schember notched a singles victory over Matt Chin in the third spot, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). At fifth singles, Pommier moved his record to 5-0 with a win over Tucker, 7-5, 6-1.

Freshman Joshua Goldstein (Miami, FL/Palmer Trinity) (Miami, FL/Palmer Trinity) improved to 3-0 on the year with a decisive win over Flanigan in the sixth spot, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2.

At second doubles, John Traver (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Chris Muench (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) defeated Chin and Zach Schulz, 8-2.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as they host Stevens in the Empire 8 tournament semifinals. Play begins at 12 p.m. at the RIT Courts.
