BUFFALO, NY – Despite out-shooting Canisius 43-28 the RIT men's hockey team was defeated by
Canisius College 5-4 in Atlantic Hockey Association action on Sunday afternoon.
Senior forward
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) became the 45
th player in RIT Hockey history to 100 career points. He reached the 100-point milestone 4:08 into the first period. He took a feed from
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) and ripped a slap shot from the slot that found the top right corner for his league-best 18
th of the season and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Brandon Cummings and Chris Forsman each scored for Canisius to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead midway through the first period.
Mike Janda (Glen Ellyn, IL/Chicago Steel) (Winfield, IL) tied the score at 2-2 with an even-strength goal at 14:51 of the first.
He crashed the net and jammed home a rebound on a shot Smit. Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) had the other assist on the play.
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) gave RIT a 3-2 lead early in the second period with a power play goal at 5:54.
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) fed a cross-ice pass to Lambert who snuck a shot past Bryce Luker. Sean Murphy (Rochester, MN/Green Bay Gamblers) (Owatoona, MN) picked up the second assist on the play.
The Golden Griffins capitalized on their few scoring opportunities in the second to take a 4-3 lead.
David Kasch stormed into the zone and tied the score at 3-3 at 12:25 of the second. Vincent Scarsella put home his own rebound at 19:48 of the second, giving the Golden Griffins their second lead of the contest.
Canisius made it 5-3 three minutes into the third period when Alec Wright jammed home a puck. David Kasch swung around from the back of the net and tried to jam the puck home. Jared DeMichiel (Avon, CT/Chicago Steel) lost sight of the puck at his feet and Wright poked it home for the eventual game-winning goal.
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) made it a one-goal game at 7:10 of the third with his second power play tally of the game. Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) fed a cross-ice pass to Smith. His shot found its way into the net for his second of the game and 19th of the season.
RIT had several chances at the close of the third period but was unable to get the equalizer.
The loss drops RIT to 14-11-4 overall and 12-8-4 in the AHA. The Tigers remain atop the AHA standings, one point ahead of Army and Sacred Heart.
RIT went 3-for-9 with the man advantage, while Canisius went 3-for-6.
RIT will face Niagara University next Saturday night, February 16 at 7:05 pm at the Frank Ritter Memorial Arena in a non-conference tilt.
